I do not believe that XXCOPY is abandoned - according the web site,
there was an update earlier this year in April. However, I think it
would be a great idea for you to contact the author of XXCOPY to see
if he would be interested in re-releasing XXCOPY under the GNU GPL or
a similar free/open lice
LSM stands for Linux Software Map. It has nothing to do with
compression. It is simply a file that contains information about
other files.
