[Freedos-user] Announce: Halibut revision 7622

2007-06-26 Thread Robert Riebisch
Hi!

_About
Simon Tatham's Halibut is a documentation production system, with
elements similar to TeX, debiandoc-sgml, TeXinfo, and others. It is
primarily targeted at people producing software manuals.

_Changes from version 1.0 to revision 7622
Halibut 1.0 source code was already released on 2007-01-31, but it
doesn't build correctly when using DJGPP 2.03p2 or 2.04 beta, because of
a bug in function mbstowcs() in DJGPP's libc.

Quoting Simon Tatham: As it happens, that particular call to mbstowcs()
was non-optimal for other reasons, so I've checked in a change to
Halibut which has the side effect of making the problem go away.

[Freedos-user] Announce: UnRAR for DOS version 3.70 (2)

2007-06-26 Thread Robert Riebisch
Hi!

_About
UnRAR is a freeware subset of (Win)RAR for unpacking RAR archives.

_Changes
Despite it's still based on official `unrarsrc-3.7.6.tar.gz' I decided
to rebuild UnRAR using `ancient' GCC 2.95.3, because resulting binary is
~14 Kbytes smaller after processing with UPX. This might be important
for floppy disk users.

 Hello,

I am trying to install freedos to my hard drive. I have a P4/800 Mhz machine
with 512 Mb of RAM. I ran through the install but I'm not sure I did
everything right. I'm installing via a serial console. The console is a PC
Weasel card. The PC Weasel acts like a video card except that it puts out
characters to a serial card on the card (not the syste serial port). I am
 doing this because I'm blind.

Anyway, I installed freedos to my HD but it crashes when I try to boot from
the HD. It looks like it crashes trying to load the CDROM driver. I was able
to capture the content of the screen via the serial console:

 Hi John,

interesting that you install via a fake VGA to COM card.
But I think your crash is not from XCDROM. The last line:

MORE$ driver by Eric Auer 2003 loaded. Use: ... MORE$

... is the last thing that NORMALLY happens before the
kernel starts to use the HMA. That requires HIMEM to do
control of the A20 properly. As you have EMM386 loaded,
you can also trigger virtual A20 and UMB problems at
that moment in FreeDOS 1.0. Your error message tells:

  CS=ES=CBE6 IP=5059 SS=9D62 SP=2134 DS=ESI=EDI=0

Re: [Freedos-user] djgpp snprintf?

2007-06-26 Thread Eric Auer

Hi Dietmar,

i try to compile the espeak synthesizer.
If i start make, it produces an error snprintf not declared.
In which lib is this function in djgpp (#include xxx?

It is possible that the C library of DJGPP does not support
snprintf, but espeak only uses snprintf in one context in
only 3 places. Replace the 3 lines as explained below and
you can compile without snprintf.

./src/speak_lib.cpp line 304
old: snprintf(path_home,sizeof(path_home),%s/espeak-data,path);
replace by new: sprintf(path_home,%s/espeak-data,path);

./src/speak_lib.cpp line 308 and also
./src/speak.cpp line 241 (both) have
old: snprintf(path_home,sizeof(path_home),%s/espeak-data,getenv(HOME));
replace by new: sprintf(path_home,%s/espeak-data,getenv(HOME));

The version with sprintf instead of snprintf will crash if
it tries to calculate a directory name longer than 120 chars
(length of path_home). The original version with snprintf
will not crash, but will instead use a truncated name. You
can also simulate snprintf with careful choice of the % args
of sprintf, but I think this is not worth the effort here.

Eric

Another solution is linking against GNU GLib, which has g_snprintf(). I could
tell you more tomorrow.

[Freedos-user] COUNTRY.SYS settings

2007-06-26 Thread Mateusz Viste
Hi,

Is there any way to set up manually all configurations for the COUTRY.SYS
settings? I mean, how could I decide exactly which character I want to use
for decimals, which for hundreds separator, how to display the date etc...?

I know that I can choose between various countries standards, but none of them
fills all my needs.

What I would like to have is:
Date format: dd.mm.
Time format: hh:mm
Decimal separator: .
Hundreds separator: '
Currency: € (I don't know if FreeDOS is storing the currency anywhere)

Any ideas? ;-)

Best regards,

[Freedos-user] announce: sys-freedos-linux update

2007-06-26 Thread Eric Auer

Hi everybody,

on http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/specials/
you can find a new version of sys-freedos-linux.zip with a few
new command line options. Check the explanations below. The new
options are --heads=n --sectors=n and --offset=n, useful if you
formatted your filesystem with mkdosfs which may have left those
fields empty. Also useful for geometry changes or if you moved a
partition with a DOS-unaware tool. The offset option might also
help to make non-primary partitions bootable. Happy SYSing :-).

Eric

 perl ./sys-freedos.pl
FreeDOS boot sector SYS for Linux v1.0, public domain by Eric Auer 2004-2007.
Puts a FreeDOS boot sector on a FAT (12/16/32) filesystem.
Note: FreeDOS boot sectors, kernel.sys and command.com license is GPL.
You still have to copy the kernel.sys and command.com files yourself!

Usage:
sys-freedos.pl --disk=file [--lba] [--heads=n] [--sectors=n] [--offset=n]

Options:
  --disk=file_or_device target filesystem
--lba selects boot sectors with LBA BIOS support
--heads=head_count overrides CHS setting 'heads' (cyls need no setting)
--sectors=sector_count overrides CHS setting 'sectors per...'
--offset=sector_count overrides partition location on disk setting

Hints:
If you formatted the drive with DOS or Windows, you need no overrides.
If CHS *x?x? shows 0 for one of the ?, override it. Use offset 0 for
diskettes, non-0 for partitions. Use overrides after using mkdosfs.
Check the output of fdisk -l -u /dev/??? to select overrides. Example:
  fdisk -l -u /dev/hdb shows '... 255 HEADS, 63 SECTORS/track ...'
  Use OFFSET 63 for hdb1: '/dev/hdb1 * 63 1028159 514048+ 6 FAT16'

[Freedos-user] announce: fdapm update: bochs fix, acpi dump

2007-06-26 Thread Eric Auer

Hi everybody,

on www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/
you can now find a new file fdapm-2007jun27.zip
with an new version of FDAPM. In short, in one line:
 www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/fdapm-2007jun27.zip

Changes are:

- VGAON / VGAOFF (DPMS screen control) now use VESA VBE/PM
if possible, and EGA / VGA hardware and BIOS access as
available if no VBE/PM support is found. This is -not- a
screen saver. The screen stays off until you re-enable it.
The function is meant for use in long-running batch files.
Use pc-tools.net/dos/blackout/ if you want a screen saver!
(it is tiny, freeware, no Win3 / int9-hook detection yet)

- there is a new option ACPIDUMP which prints your ACPI
tables RSDT, FACP and DSDT. Maybe others if they
are encountered before the DSDT is found. This can be
a lot of data. Nice for debugging and nice for testing
the speed of NANSI ;-). Use ZIP if you want to send
such a dump by mail, it can easily be 100 kB or more.

- the APMDOS function (the only function where FDAPM stays
in RAM as a resident tool) now avoids using the APM BIOS
CPU idle function if the VESA VBE BIOS OEM name string
starts with Boch. Background: Bochs BIOS implements the
function but the Bochs 2.3 engine crashes if you use it.
Thanks to Rugxulo for the VBE suggestion - a simple check
and reasonably safe as Bochs detector. As FDAPM will use
non-BIOS CPU idle instead, APMDOS now works in Bochs.

- whitespace after a command line option is now ignored, so
both FDAPM ACPIDUMP and FDAPM ACPIDUMP log.txt are
now treated the same (note the space before the ).

Enjoy saving energy in DOS :-).

Eric

PS: It is possible that Bochs gets bored in CPU idle HLT
state and makes the virtual time run faster to compensate.
If this really happens and causes problems, I could modify
FDAPM to block the whole APMDOS in Bochs. Note that APMDOS
is a nice way to reduce host CPU load in DOSEMU. No funny
clock things, DOSEMU simply leaves more CPU time for Linux.

PPS: Is it FreeCOM specific to treat tool option file
as tool option with a trailing space? The whole thing
is a bit un-intuitive: echo hello file says hello .
On the other hand, people might WANT to say hello ?

PPS: Other updated tools are my shift lock change beeper
 www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/locktone-2007jun23.zip
and my very tiny (1 kB) implementation of RUNTIME
 www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/specials/runtime.zip
which even shows the time in your COUNTRY specific format :-).
On the other hand, it only shows English text. Still nice?

Re: [Freedos-user] COUNTRY.SYS settings

2007-06-26 Thread Henrique Peron
Hello Mateusz!
(Unfortunately I still didn't find a way to type non-western-european
languages on Mozilla Thunderbird! :-( )

All I have to say about the Euro sign is for you not to worry since
you'll probably use cp852, which already contains the Euro since I've
prepared that for FreeDOS following IBM-DOS standards instead of MS-DOS
standards. The only difference is precisely on codepoint 170, which is
blank on a regular MS-DOS cp852 while in contains the Euro on IBM-DOS
cp852. If you have a polish (or polish for programmers) keyboard and it
does not have the Euro labeled on, you'll find the Euro on AltGr + U
(in case you haven't tried that already... ;-)).

If you need the Euro sign AND support for kashubian instead of polish,
please let me know.

Na razie,
Henrique
