I can’t say for FreeDOS 1.1 distribution files. However, some of the utilities required by the 1.2 Previews require a 386 or better to function. Also, CD-ROM and bootable USB really was not supported pre-386. So, all of the release images for FreeDOS 1.2 use the kernel built for 386 or better processors. The kernel package that is included with 1.2 contains both the 386 and x86 kernels along with several docs and batch file utilities.
