[Freedos-user] FDSHIELD test in Win DOS box needed...

2005-04-27 Thread Eric Auer

Hi, I have a theory about FDSHIELD in a DOS box:
The /b and /B boot sector write protection should work, but
not against Win console programs. Only against DOS programs?
More important, the /w and /W disk write protection will NOT
work, because the DOS box does not handle file writes as raw
sector I/O. So the write protection fails, as it does for
network drives and other non-FAT drives. HOWEVER, if you do
select both /w and /W at the same time, FDSHIELD will trigger
make all items look like the read-only attrib is set, which
should give SOME protection anyway! However, LongFileName based
access is never intercepted by FDSHIELD, so only classic DOS
programs will be blocked in that mode as far as I can tell.

As I have no 32bit Win around, it would be nice if somebody
could test those predictions AND write a few sentences about
this behaviour that I could add to the documentation. Or, even
better, provide an updated version of the current documentation
which explains the Win DOS box specific behaviour. OS/2 description
would be an extra :-). If you update the full docs, please do not
send them on the list: Rather, upload them or send me a ZIPPED
version of only the docs off-list. Thanks!

Eric

If you explain, what and how should be tested (step-by-step), I may try
do this.
