Yes, that can be a little confusing. But, here is how to think about it… BASE is a minimal set of packages to provide MS-DOS compatibility. ALL is a much larger FULL installation of FreeDOS and provides many more packages. However, the CD-ROM and Larger USB stick image also provide hundreds of megabytes of additional EXTRA packages that are not installed. These are never installed with BASE or ALL and are provided on the installation media for user convenience. That being said… If you run the installer in advanced mode, you have an additional option to perform detailed package selection through FDIMPLES at install time. As a side note. There are even versions of Windows that contain some extra software and utilities on their install disc. However, you must manually hunt down those programs and install them yourself.___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

That is a good point! AHCI is a more modern communication method with harddisks, CD/DVD/BD drives and so on, which for example improves parallel access to multiple files. What you wondered about was ACPI: Those are data tables describing your hardware, so operating system drivers can adapt to it and do not need to use BIOS for access. > Tried IDE: Bingo! Was seeing my DVD after reboot. Yes, the CD/DVD driver only supports classic IDE style modes for SATA / IDE / ATAPI, not the modern AHCI modes. Maybe that should be mentioned in the install documents. Regards, Eric ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
[Freedos-user] No packages to install: check SATA configuration in BIOS: best IDE (Not RAID or AHCI)
I finally was able to install FreeDOS-1.3rc2 (heu... yes it is not released yet ... had to generate it for many hours). I used FD13LGCY.iso (LEGACY)... as CD1 and CD2 seems gone in RC2. Well, it does not seems this was using CWSDPMI, or trying to generate a big ram disk. So no page fault error. But it was still unable to find the packages. I realized that UDVD2.SYS driver (CDROM, DVD driver necessary for SHSUCDX to work) was not loading with message like: Nothing found, UDVD2.SYS not loaded. It turned out that this was due to my SATA configuration in BIOS (DVD reader/burner is connected with SATA on my computer) was: Sata Controller 1: RAID Tried AHCI (not working... is it AHCI that you need to "decrypt" BIOS tables?). Tried IDE: Bingo! Was seeing my DVD after reboot. Although I had chosen "Install all packages with sources", it is unclear sources was installed. At first I have searched some games on installed hard disk but found none. Until I realized that I had to use FDIMPLES to install packages present on hard disk, but not really installed.___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
