Sent this to devel instead of user;
I had answered my own question:
the command:
find . | cpio --create --format='newc' > /path/to/newinitrd
works so long as it is executed from the directory containing the files to
be wriiten to the new initrd;
otherwise, it looks all over for cpio archives; at one point, I got an
initrd of several GB!.
