here are two more resources that deserve to be mentioned in your article:

http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/
http://vsynchmame.mameworld.net/

both are arcade emulators that can play sound using internal drivers, similar 
to mpxplay. their source codes are freely available. some code from vsyncmame 
was absorbed into advancemame in its later versions. follow the "dots" in 
vsyncmame website.
