Try a PS/2 mouse or a DOS USB driver instead of BIOS legacy.

Hello.
I bought december this month an ACER ASPIRE 7736G laptop.
I made an install of freedos 1.0 from bootable cd following screen instruction
without any problem.
I tried different cdrom driver (XCDROM.SYS, GCDROM.SYS).
I get this message :
No CD-ROM drive to use; GCDROM not loaded.

Note : After booting with freedos bootable cd, I can access to the
cd-rom drive( elterito is loaded in memory ).
Could you try the UIDE cd-rom driver please? it's the most recent work

Then I give up as well. I assume your drive is internal, and connected
to SATA like your subject mentions. Does it run in IDE compatibility
mode or in AHCI?

Hi, Eric,
I kind of missed the start of the thread - about which
software are we talking? Why does it take several seconds
to refresh the screen? While the mouse is moving? While
it is not moving? Both?
Included at the end of this message is my original post
and AUTOEXEC.BAT now contains:

IIRC I already had suggested to empty it (except CTMOUSE) ;-)
everything from FreeDOS also works under the MS
kernel, and Desi-III is equally fast.
IIRC I had already suggested EDR-DOS or (DR-DOS) kernel.
Also the FAT=16 FreeDOS

Again, try to save more low memory under FreeDOS.

Nevertheless, you should update a few things: HIMEM, EMM386, CTMOUSE, ...
Also, throw away XDMA.SYS, it shouldn't be needed and might actually cause
problems.
