Hi,

the howtos from pre 1.2 do not seem to work for 1.2. How and what configs need
to be changed to get a fixed ip adress in freedos 1.2?

Did someone have a look into why syslinux boot does not work when installing?

KERNEL: By default, the C:KERNEL.SYS is the booted kernel
for FreeDOS 1.2. It is 386 version and is the same as the
C:FDOSBINKERNL386.SYS that gets installed during the
installation process.

So why doesnt it boot after installing the alternative boot loader?
I had to rename and copy the 2 files over to get to that point?!? Is it a
bug?

FDIMPLES: When you launch FDIMPLES, it searches for any of the FreeDOS 1.2
install media, repository CD-ROMs and local package directories. If it cannot
find any of these package sources, it just continues without them. Any packages
that are installed and not included in one of those package sources are grouped
together in a ?! Installed? category. This behavior allows the user to browse
their installed packages and remove items without bothering to mount their
package source media.

In the future, the plan is for FDIMPLES to also be able to pull packages from
multiple online repositories. Instead of being limited to a single repository,
this would allow for users to connect to other repositories that could even
include closed source software.

Okay! That explains the view as I had not attached the iso.

Hope that helps a little,

Jerome

For sure! Sadly not much information is coming on this mailing list. Are
there not much developers on freedos as on kolibri
os?

Is there an easy way to double the font size? When running Freedos in
VMWare on a 4k monitor, the window is so small as to be almost unusable.
None of the VMWare display settings change the resolution of the window.
Even in full screen mode, the font size doesn't change.

I just finished setting up networking in FreeDOS 1.2 in a VirtualBox
machine. I documented the steps here: FreeDOS1.2NetworkSetup

It goes as far as describing how to setting up an FTP server under FreeDOS
so that files can be transferred between the virtual machine and the host.
I saw a request asking for something like this in the email archives.
Constructive criticism is welcome.

I have made a small video to show my issue with freedos 1.2 and syslinux.
After installing it freedos does not boot because it is looking for kernel.sys
in c:\fdos\bin\ were there is no such file. Also it seems to be only looking
for files in c:\ and kernl386.sys renamed and copied to c:\ is not fully
working. Please, watch the video and tell me what or where kernel.sys should
be.

Otherwise booting into kolibri os works like a charme with this method!

Hi,

I am new to freedos and got to this mailing list through this youtube
video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0sP1VAo0D8

Where I wrote the follwing question:

Nice video. I got that far, but I was really looking into whether one
could use freedos to format a harddisc and put freedos and kolibri os
alongside. Got into some problems with the last part. First http://kolibrios.org; href="http://kolibrios.org;>kolibrios.org
download is 7z format so I got to download and install 7zip but it complained
about wrong format. Than I realized that freedos as dos only supports 32bit fat
not vfat which would be needed to put the kolibrios folder on and to boot the
kolibrios.img. Is there a disc formating tool for freedos which supports making
partitions with that kind of format and would it than be possible to copy over
the kolibrios folder? Final goal would be to make a how to get freedos onto a
blank system format and install it download latest kolibri os version and get
it to boot from the harddisc (not from the disc image) and use a partition with
the rest off the kolibri os applications on it.

I am active on kolibrios.org a small assembler written os. It is not a
final product and therefore has no installer yet. One can use the disc image to
boot from or (the better option) make a bootable partition and put the
kolibrios.img and the extra applications into a kolibrios folder. Over the
years this was the main thing newbies complained about. That is why I am
searching for a way to to use some third party software to make a easier howto.
I got to the point where I can run freedos and than encountered the problem
that I could not unzip the latest kolibri os 7z file with the needed files. I
than realized that dos does not support the bigger partition size than 2000 MBs
and the greater letter count than 8.3. Is there a way to partition a second hdd
partition like e.g. windows xp would do (vfat) from within freedos and get the
files from the 7zip onto that. Booting the kolibrios.img should be possible
with syslinux memdisk or the dos bootloader from kolibri os.

Anyway, great work you did on freedos! Getting it up and running with
network support in virtualbox was easy!

How can I add the power of FreeDOS to my DOSBox?

Well, here you go. Keep all of the flexibility that DOSBox provides. Yet, add
the power of the FreeDOS Command Shell and other FreeDOS utilities. The FreeDOS
installer supports DOSBox. Please note, this is not a pure OS install. But, a

This allows the host system to interact with the DOSBox filesystem and behave

I am proud to announce the release of FreeDOS 1.2! You can download it from
our website at www.freedos.org.

The latest official FreeDOS distribution is the result of the hard work
from many people. Thanks to everyone in the FreeDOS Project for their work
towards this new release! There are too many of you to recognize
individually, but you have all helped enormously. Thank you!

DOS is one of the oldest PC operating systems. FreeDOS has an equally long
history. We started the FreeDOS Project in 1994 to create a free, open
source software version of DOS. We made our first Alpha release in
September 1994, and our first Beta in March 1998. In September 2006, we
finally released FreeDOS 1.0. And in January 2012, we released FreeDOS 1.1.

The new FreeDOS 1.2 is mostly an incremental change over FreeDOS 1.1,
although you'll find a few nice surprises.

FreeDOS 1.2 now makes it easier to connect to a network. We include a
revamped network setup and useful network applications to get you online.
Try the Dillo web browser for a graphical web experience, or the Links web
browser if you want just the text.

If you're interested in updated functionality, you can find new tools under
the Utilities section. For example, FreeDOS 1.2 provides several image
enhancement programs like Pngcrush and Gifsicle. Or you can enhance the DOS
command line with Unix-like utilities like sed, grep, tee, head, and bc.

Many people use FreeDOS to play games, and FreeDOS 1.2 now includes several
open source games for you to try. We include Freedoom and Boom for classic
first-person shooter fans. Arcade-style game fans will like Wing, a
familiar space shooter game, or Kiloblaster, a fast-paced arcade shooter.
Classic gamers will want to try Nethack, Invaders, Sudoku, and Tetris. For
those who want to play their own classic DOS games, we provide other tools
like Slowdown, so you can run certain older games on a fast modern computer.

But I think the first thing you'll notice about FreeDOS 1.2 is the new
installer! I wanted to make the install process an easy one, for new and
experienced users alike. And we have that in the new FreeDOS 1.2 installer,
thanks to Jerome Shidel. If you are a new user, the installer makes it easy
to install FreeDOS and get going with a few defaults. If you're an
experienced DOS user, you can unlock the Advanced installer that lets you
tweak the FreeDOS install to your preference.

I'm very excited for the new FreeDOS 1.2 distribution!

Hello. I care SATA support on FreeDOS 1.1 CD. I researched AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS on FreeDOS 1.1 CD on boot floppy disk image (FDBOOT.IMG) that is
booting via Syslinux. I applieda commands those are I found on FDBOOT.IMG on

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1 install problem

2006-09-18 Thread crm

FreeDOS 1 installs to hard disk fine, but after reboot I get ..Error!

If I hit enter it asks me to insert the boot disk in Drive A. It appears
that Drive A is the DVD ROM drive containing the FreeDOS install CD. The
live option runs just fine. For some reason it does not seem to be looking
at Drive C to boot from.

I have in the past successfully installed a previous version (beta 9 I
think), which I removed by formatting the C (FAT) partition using Powerquest
PatitionMagic under Windows XP. I did not have this problem with the
earlier version.

The FreeDOS area is in the first primary partion of my hard disk with Win XP
in the second (NTFS) partition. I use PowerQuest Bootmagic as my boot
manager, which I disabled temporarily prior to the FreeDOS install, after
having first set the FreeDOS partion as the default to boot from.

I have even tried using the sys c: command from the CDROM but I still get
the same problem.

Any suggestions as to how to make FreeDOS boot from drive C much
appreciated.
