That has nothing to do with any specific Asus model (I have the same basic issue on Dell and Toshiba as well), but simply the fact that there is no "plug&play" USB in DOS. Plugging the USB device after DOS is already booted will not work on ANY of them. Plug it in BEFORE turning the system (back) on, and it will recognize it (BIOS will willing) just as any other hard drive... As others have pointed out, what probably happens is that if the USB is not inserted when you boot, it is not recognised. This is a BIOS issue/feature. So make the USB not bootable, eg by reformatting it (or removing it from the boot order in BIOS), and then have it inserted when you boot. /Tomas ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Ideally Id like to add programs from the bonus disk. > > Any suggestions? > > Thanks > Well, you could probably do this (roughly outlined, not step by step): 1) Create the USB install media again. 2) On a separate machine, Use a utility like GPARTED to expand the partition to the entire USB drive. (there are bootable CD versions of GPARTED available). 3) Simply copy the packages directory from the BonusCD to a new directory on the USB stick (like BONUS_CD). 4) Make sure you download the latest copy of FDIMPLES and place it on the USB stick as well. 5) Boot that USB stick on the FreeDOS machine. 6) Update the installed version of FDIMPLES on your HDD with the new downloaded version. 7) you can then copy that entire new bonus package directory to the HDD. 8) Reboot without the USB. 9) Start FDIMPLES giving it the BonusCD package directory. 10) Install and remove stuff. (or… This alternative can be easier or harder. If not done correctly, packages may install to the USB drive or be improperly installed on the hard drive. Resulting in the inability to use the package manager to remove them. Basically, in part it is what the FreeDOS installer does when installing from USB. ) 7) Modify the \FREEDOS\BIN\FDNPKG.CFG file to use drive remapping. 8) adjust your DOSDIR environment variable settings to the internal drive. 9) Run the new version of FDIMPLES giving it the packages in the BonusCD directory on the USB drive. 10) Reboot without the USB stick and use the stuff installed. Or, Depending on what Aspire One you have, you might be able to do this: If you have a SD CARD slot (like on the Aspire One I have), you may be able to write the USB Installer to an SD Card and copy the BonusCD to a Flash Drive. I noticed on my D250-1924 Aspire One that I can boot with both installed. When that happens, the BIOS boots from the SD-CARD as drive C:. Plus maps the USB stick and Hard Disk for drives under DOS. It was rather neat. :-) Jerome > > ___ > Freedos-user mailing list > Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] Issues when installed on an Acer Aspire One
Hi Lyn, Let me first state that everything I'm about to say may depend upon which model of Acer Aspire One you have. They had different models and even the hardware within one model varied over the years they were produced... so... your mileage may vary. On my Apsire I found that once I booted it up I could not plug a USB stick into the machine and have FreeDOS recognize. But... if I plugged the USB stick containing the bonus disk into the machine _before_ powering it on, then the BIOS would recognize it and make it available to FreeDOS as drive D: and had no problem. Unfortunately, I could not make the networking work on my model, so I gave up on that piece of hardware after that and threw it back onto the "pile of old laptops". Hope that helps, McC On 9/7/24 1:04 PM, Lyn Thomas via Freedos-user wrote: Hi all Having not played around with FreeDOS for several years I have decided to try to install on an Aspire One. Hi all Having not played around with FreeDOS for several years I have decided to try to install on an Aspire One. Having managed the install via the boot disk and then via the full install disk (via a usb drive) I am then stuck adding additional programs as I can only use a usb drive - no optical drive or floppy.
