Thanks for all the links and ideas!

We finally ended up going with STUFFIT.COM, which doesn't require using 4DOS and has some very nifty features (like being able to put delays between key presses and even search the screen for text before inserting the key press). It seems to work just fine under FreeDOS, as well as in an XP console which is handy.

I couldn't find a home page for stuffit (version 3.10b, written by Terje Mathisen in January 1991) but you can pick it up at:
