Re: [Freedos-user] win95 setup?

OpenOSX is just a company that has made a custom build of Bochs, a PC
emulator. I guess they ship FreeDOS with it. Link:

[Freedos-user] win95 setup?

2004-04-18 Thread Tim Galvin
I have installed FreeDos (from OpenOSX) on my mac G4 to run an old
windows program. I am having trouble installing windows 95 from my old
CD. I cannot get Setup to run properly. I keep getting a message that
Setup cannot read this Setup[.CAB] file. Setup cannot continue.
after which the program shuts down and freezes up. I'm guessing that
the win95 files need to be extracted from the CD - shouldn't FreeDos do
this automatically? I don't know what to do about it. Any suggestions?

we have managed to run/install the Windows2000 setup from DOS, but not Win9x.
Microsoft has a lot of undocumented code in their programs that is not reproduced by
any FreeDOS component.
therefore, it's recommended to use a Windows or MSDOS bootdisk, for example from
www.bootdisk.com
FreeDOS is not specifically aimed at setting up Windows, but to act as a replacement
for the
no longer (by Microsoft) supported MS-DOS operating system, which are mainly used on
old
computers or for old software (mainly games or very specific software).
FreeDOS cdrom-driver is still in alpha-status, which means it's not very reliable under
more stressfull conditions. I can recommend the VIDE-CDD.SYS driver, or the drivers
delivered with the bootdisk images at above mentioned site.
I'm not aware of any FreeDOS from OpenOSX. perhaps they (What's OpenOSX?) offer
support?
you may try an emulator like Bochs (http://bochs.sf.net) to run x86 code on your Mac.
the Bochs site also offers a FreeDOS image, but that's quite ancient.
I'm releasing a new FreeDOS distribution tomorrow or tuesday,
and might create a newer image. More of a problem is to contact the Bochs team :(
