Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS in a browser

2015-04-04 Thread Dale E Sterner
I learn something new everyday. So its a trail run of an OS without
any risk. I like it. I usually install everything new on a seperate CF
chip.
There isn't anything else present to damage - like windows. My
really important stuff is kept on a dos CF chip way out of the reach of a
virus.
Thanks very much for the explanation.

cheers

There's also 8086tiny [0].

It's probably best to get a distinct server to separate the traffic.
A 10MB image downloaded by 100 people is already 1GB of bandwidth. A
your could pick up a server (say from a vendor at lowendbox[1]) for a
few dollars/month with 2TB or more bandwidth. However, seeing if the
Internet Archive would be willing to support something might be more
fruitful.

It does not require Java, it requires *JavaScript*. They are two
completely different things.

v86 is a virtual x86 emulator. It's like VirtualPC or Bochs or VMWare or
VirtualPC or QEMU or VirtualBox or any other PC emulator .. except v86 runs
entirely in your web browser. You don't need to run a local emulator.

JavaPC (aka 'JPC') and PCjs are other examples of a PC emulator that runs
in the web browser.

The tradeoff is that all the data lives on a web server somewhere, not your
own computer. So the end-user has no control over what software gets
installed. But if you want to let others experiment with your system (for
example, to try out FreeDOS) without the risk of having to install it on
their own, running the emulator in a browser isn't a bad idea.

I'm thinking about adding something like this to the freedos.org website so
people can try out FreeDOS. Not sure about bandwidth and web server
requirements yet, though - so no promises.

What is v86?

This is interesting, not only for FreeDOS, but for other possible disk images I
can find or produce!

I briefly tried the freedos profile, would like to try again with a real
working mouse as opposed to xkbset mousekeys, where I can better get to the
scroll bars.

FreeDOS is only one of the OSes the site has available this way.
Windows 1.01, Arch Linux, KolibriOS, Linux 2.6, Linux 3.18, OpenBSD,
and SolarOS are similarly packaged. See http://copy.sh/v86/

The same chap also has a Brainfuck editor interpreter in JavaScript
online: http://copy.sh/brainfuck/. It compiles Brainfuck code to JS
and runs it as a web worker process. :-)

Interesting! This is a new one.

I knew about JPC (http://jpc.sourceforge.net/) and PCjs (
http://jsmachines.net/docs/pcjs/) but v86 seems to be new.

For those interested, v86 is open source software under the BSD 2-clause
license, and can be found on github: https://github.com/copy/v86

I'll add v86 to our Links page: http://www.freedos.org/links/
