Re: [Freedos-user] Installing freedos to virtualbox them copying dice contents to an actual computer

2022-03-31 Thread Bret Johnson
Seeing as how you've referred to "chapters", it sounds like you're making
contributions to a book or dissertation or script or some sort of larger
document. I'd be wary of using a text editor instead of a word processor --
they are two very different things.

A text editor is really designed for editing things like batch files and source
code for programs. Even a "fancy" text editor with features like the ability
to open multiple files at the same time or handling really large files doesn't
turn it into a word processor. At least from a simplistic perspective, the
main thing that separates a text editor from a word processor is that a word
processor understands what sentences and paragraphs are while a text editor
only understands lines (rows) and columns. What a word processor brings to the
table compared to a text editor is much more than a spell-checker. You CAN use
a text editor to create a document with sentences and paragraphs, but it's very
cumbersome.

A word processor understands what sentences and paragraphs are, and if your
ultimate goal is to create a document a word processor is much less frustrating
to use than a text editor. Similarly, if your ultimate goal is to create the
source code for a program, a word processor is much more frustrating to use
than a text editor (though it can be done).

If you're only doing small tasks, you can use either tool and "suffer through"
the shortcomings associated with using the wrong tool for the job. For larger
projects, though, you should really use the correct tool, even if only for your
own sanity.

If you need IDE drives, I have stacks of them, (one of the things I was
able to rescue during our recent forced move). They're all different
sizes, but I'd be willing to send you a box of them for the cost of
shipping if you want them, since I no longer have any machines that can
use them, (those were lost in the move).

Probably just the BASE packages.
Or maybe the kernel + FreeCOM only.

editing machine, so bringing it down to the minimum, freedos and
whatever text editor is included would actually do the job nicely.

Depends what you need, what keystrokes you like, etc.

I find WordPerfect 6.1 for DOS on a modern machine is quite fun to
use. In its day it was considered bloated and sluggish, but on a Core
2 Duo it's blisteringly fast. :-)

I personally happen to _like_ MS Word and I have that on some machines
and in DOSemu. It too is very very quick on modern-ish (21st century)
hardware.

If you like the WordPerfect keystrokes and UI (which personally I do
not) then the WordPerfect Editor is freeware. It does only plain text
but it's even lighter and quicker than the full app.

What do *you* really need from FreeDOS to run WP?
Probably just the BASE packages.
Or maybe the kernel + FreeCOM only.

You may also want to look at SvarDOS' floppy images:
http://www.svardos.org/?p=files=20220314

SvarDOS is based on FreeDOS, but kernel is currently still from FD 1.2,
IIRC.

Re: [Freedos-user] Installing freedos to virtualbox them copying dice contents to an actual computer

2022-03-29 Thread John Vella
The host machine will be more than capable, as I have installed virtual
freedos on this in the past. It's a 9th gen core i7 with 32gb, (I nearly
typed 32mb!) off ram but now I've had a chance to think about it I'll
probably just do the floppy install, purely because disk swapping is fun!

I'll end this by saying I also got a surprise when the machine started
working as I was convinced it had 4Mb of ram but it turns out that it's got
8 meg!

What machine will VirtualBox be running on? If your VirtualBox host
machine can run it acceptably, you *may* have a plan.

Getting FreeDOS working in VirtualBox can be non-trivial. Jim Hall and
others here can provide pointers

> Is there an obvious flaw to my plan?

If your main intent is a quicker install, it's likely to be faster to
just install FreeDOS and WP on the 486 on the bare metal instead of
creating an image in VirtualBox. (It will take the same time to do it
in VirtualBox, with the added overhead of getting it to run in
VirtualBox in the first place.)

In the old days, when you got a new machine, you booted DOS from
floppy, formatted the HD from DOS with format /s (which copied the DOS
system files to the HD,)then removed the floppy, rebooted from the HD,
and carried on.

That is likely still your best option.

Personally, were I to install FreeDOS in VirtualBox or another virtual
machine, I'd do it because I wanted a full working FreeDOS
installation, and I didn't *have* an Old Skool machine to do a bare
metal install on.
