In this case, all customizations had been added to the /etc/dirsrv/slapd-<realm>-COM/schema/99user.ldif file. Simply commenting out the offending parts of the schema was sufficient to start the replica directory server. It looks like the specific attribute is supposed to be nsAIMid, not nsaimid.

I'm not sure why 99user.ldif is getting confused but it is not case sensitive so this isn't the problem.
