we also could not get Ubuntu 16.04 to run with out Kerberized NFS
Server. Ubuntu 14.04 runs without problems. Maybe you can try that?

I think you problem is FreeNAS and not IPA itself. In FreeNAS 10 they will
have built in IPA functionality.
