Hi Celine we usually use mris_expand with a negative number to grow the surface inwards. Something like mris_expand lh.white -1 lh.interior would move the surfaces inwards by 1mm everywhere and save it in a file name lh.initerior. You could then visualize that in freeview or tkmedit as usual.
