It's always hard to get developers interested in a bug that you found in a year-old version of freetype 2.2.1 from FC6. Please try freetype 2.3.1. You can download freetype-2.3.1-1.fc7.src.rpm from Fedora development and rebuild it with no problem on FC6. You can also find some useful info in

What I found was when using PTK, the Thai text came out correctly, but in my engine it comes out with additional spacing between characters when there shouldn't be any. The fix is now in the CVS. However, it's not optimal because the autofitter still increases the width of some glyphs;
