I know this is a very old topic, but I started setting up my next freevo
system (4th or 5th upgrade now), and I was able to work around this problem
I had almost a year ago.
To fix it, I simple put an empty input.conf in my ~/.mplayer directory. This
way the default mplayer inputs are overridden with nothing, so when the key
is pressed, mplayer ignores it, and freevo picks it up!
Not sure if someone else had discovered this yet, but I though I would pass
it along...

Subject: [Freevo-users] keystrokes missed

Been playing with this latest release of freevo + directfb, and have noticed that when playing video through mplayer, the freevo keyboard commands don't work (but thew mplayer ones do!). This is quite annoying, especially since I am using mplayer for TV viewing, and in order to change the channel, I have to quit the channel I am viewing back to the tvguide, and then select a new
channel.
Does anyone know why mplayer is not running correctly in slave mode, and is
picking up all the keystrokes directly? More importantly, does anyone know
how to fix this problem?
Thanks!

PS, the new gui look to freevo kicks ass! especially the new web interface!
