It depends on how hard-core he wants to be in programming, whether he wants to continue using basic, and whether he wants to be able to faff about with windows dialog boxes - easily. VBis pretty good at knocking up windows for the basic programmer; my Grandfather was extremely happy with

I can't believe you didn't suggest QBasic on DOS. It's great for talking to the underlying hardware. I can remember being able to do stuff on QBasic that it was a nightmare on VB3.0, like talking to an old fashion tape drive. Plus it will be an easier transitionfrom Sinclair. Andy.
