CP Saikia memorial meeting at press club on Tuesday
Guwahati: Journalists and well-wishers have decided to payhomage to Chandra Prasad Saikia, a renowned author-journalist of theregion, at a function organized in Guwahati Press Club on August 8 on the occasion of his 11th death anniversary. Padma Bhusan CP Saikia mentored many journalists of Assam during his tenure as theeditor of Natun Dainik, which heralded a new wave of modernjournalism. The illustrious editor-journalist was also credited forinitiating the book fair movement in the State since 1984. As the secretaryof State publication board, he not only edited Prakash, an Assameseliterary magazine, but also took leadership to publish a number ofinvaluable books like Hasti Vidyarnava, Kautilyar Arthashastra, Prachya Shasanawali, Sattriya Nritya etc. A freedom fighter, novelist, editor and commentator, CPSaikia (1927-2006) was honoured with prestigious Sahitya Akademiaward for his novel Maharathi (where the author reinterpreted the roleof great warrior Karna of Mahabharata) and also adorned theprestigious chair of Asom Sahitya Sabha. Stood firm against the terrorism in the turbulent days ofNineties with his strong editorials, CP Saikia enriched with a greatsense of humour with his extraordinary personality. The participantswill remember their very own CPS, as he was popularly known amongfellow journalists, in the informal meeting starting at 3 pm onTuesday.
