Alright, I'll take the bait and ask the stupied question - just how
exactly do you place the item into the catalog? I know you can upload the
item as a thumbnail, but I don't see how you upload the actual item to be
printed.

Greg,
This is for a PrintOne isn't it? If it is static you don't need a template.
You put your item in the catalog, making it static, then you go to the
products and create the product description, create the pricing for it and
you are done.
