So in today's NYT, we learn that we live on a
3rd generation planet, and that a 1st generation
planet has been found.

The 1st generation planet presumably has far less
"heavy elements" than 3rd generation planets,
so we feel saddness for the advanced lifeforms
that were perhaps thereby frustrated from
developing on those planets.
