Thanks, Dan and Jason. I've found this problem documented elsewhere on the
web, but no solution. It's a bit of a pain, since I work on a group of a
dozen machines that have 1.11.1p1 installed (thanks, RH7.3), but I'll work
around it.
Stupid broken interfaces.

Your client is probably out of date. Some older clients don't talk
well with newer servers. The FVWM CVS server is running 1.11.17.
