External HD / Firewire problem with Mac G4 Cube

I was working on my relatively unused external HD connected via Firewire on my Mac G4 Cube under System 9.2 and I am sure that I disconnected the drive too soon. Since then the drive is no longer recognized, it asks me if I want to Format it or Eject it. I check the drive under Mac OS X 10.3
