Original Airport cards don't have support for WPA built in.  But OS 
10.4.something does provide it (as long as you updated to the latest 10.4 
version, 10.4.11, you should be good).

But 10.4.11 only supports WPA & TKIP.  It doesn't support WPA2 or AES.  So 
check out the WiFi settings to see if WPA & TKIP are enabled.  I have seen some 
indications that there can be a problem if WPA2 and/or AES is enabled along 
with WPA and TKIP. 

Also it's possible that your WiFi doesn't support 802.11b, only 'g' and/or 'n'. 
 The Original Airport cards are only 'b'.

You could also get them connected using an external bridge device.  There are 
dedicated devices that do this, some Apple Airport base stations (Airport 
Express at least) as well as some WiFi routers.
