wondering why the beast is so docile in safe mode, when it totally
hangs in normal boot!

so when I restarted with the CD it said that it could not run and

In addition to the other suggestions, I would start out with a file/
disk check/repair using the diskutil. You can access it by booting up
on the cd boot rom for your system.
