We were looking to revitalize some of our older assets where I work. None of the 3 cards was stable. These were the 7448 series. These 3 cards went between different Macs, about 10 in all during the testing ranging from the Sawtooth, Gig-E, DA, QS2001 and QS2002. Cards didn't work reliably over one night burn in on any of the machines. OWC claimed that I didn't install them properly. Said they tested them in house when I returned them and they worked fine. My procedure was to flash the firmware on the machine, shut machine down, pull old card, put new card in and make sure firmly seated on socket and mounting lugs and snugged the bolts up, hooked up fans etc, reset PMU and was using a clean 10.4 install. Problems ranged from outright system freezes, kernel panics to programs unexpectedly quitting. Replaced these with Sonnet accelerators and had no issues. I have also gotten a lot of bad ram from OWC as of late. Of course when I RMA the ram it always tests good with them and they insult my intelligence by saying that I didn't seat the ram correctly. Of course I tested this ram in several G5 systems as well as G4MDD systems and even a few Dell PC systems and all had issues. Look around for a noise fix on that G4 case fan. I read it somewhere -- maybe here -- and it was basically just cushioning the fan by putting soft rings around the screws holding the fan assembly. Thanks much. I'll look into it. My next question was going to be about computer noise in general. Just to make sure I'm not chasing down the wrong problem. It's been known to happen. Only 3 parts (or part types) in a computer can make noise. The drives and the fans, obviously. And the power supply, which I have to suppose hums faintly, though the noise is obscured by that of the fans and the drive(s). Right? Supplemental question: Is it at all conceivable that a power supply would hum abnormally enough that the noise could be confused under any circumstances with seemingly mechanical, moving parts noise? Aside from the wavering hum (agitated bees) I mentioned, the noise that tends to start up after extended use is *certainly* mechanical, but within the limits of my knowledge I cannot rule out the possibility of more than one problem going on, at least not without hearing from the experts first. Oh, another question: Would/could a failing power supply give any noise warnings, anyway (aside from sparks and pops and explosions)? Enabling 48 bit LBA on a Sawtooth
(Power Mac G4 Sawtooth 450 MHz, Bus Speed 100 MHz, 512 MB RAM, running OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2 on separate partitions of a 160 GB hard drive, Tiger 10.4.11 on another 40 GB HD) Questions about installing an Enable-LBA48 patch: 1. When? (Any time?) 2. From where? (OS X on either drive?) 3. Danger? 4. Will it even work on this Sawtooth (read something about 100 MHz bus speed being a stumbling block, might have misunderstood). Essentially, I need to know if running this patch undoes anything/ everything done to partition and copy to the new HD. Under the impression that my old hard drive was failing fast, I was in some hurry to get the new HD going and consequently skipped trying the patch first thing. Thanks. I believe Quartz Extreme and Core Image debuted in Tiger, and are used extensively throughout the UI. For a while, I was running a Radeon 9700 in a Sawtooth (with a 1GHz CPU w/ no L3 cache) and Leopard, and performance was quite good. My processor upgrade was not terribly expensive, though not cheap either(~$100) and was well worth the money. Problem is, a decent graphics card with Quartz/Core Image support isn't going to be that much less expensive than a low-end CPU. Watch LEM Swap for deals, though CPU upgrades don't seem to appear all that often. As for the SATA card I believe any Mac-compatible SATA PCI card will work. Watch to make sure that the card you get is bootable, if that's important to you. A more economic upgrade may be to get an altogether new Mac with a faster CPU. If you formatted the new HD on a Mac that supports LBA48 addressing so that it currently is recognized and formatted correctly as larger than 128GB (Apple Partition Map, HFS+ journalling file system), and then you transferred it into the Sawtooth so that it's now only recognized as 128GB, then perhaps there's a chance you're still OK? This is a dangerous scenario, and you should stop using the HD immediately and apply the patch before you get any data corruption. If you formatted the new HD on the Sawtooth so that it was only formatted as a 128GB HD, and now you're trying to enable the rest of the space, this won't work, you'll need to patch FIRST and then reformat the HD again from the beginning. When you patch the firmware, the patch holds until the PRAM/NVRAM is reset. The ways this can happen are: 1) you manually zap the PRAM holding Cmd-Opt-P-R from Shutdown state. 2) you reset the NVRAM manually using commands from within Open Firmware 3) your PRAM battery is low or dead and you unplug the computer from a power source. 4) you press the CUDA reset button on the motherboard. This means that if you want the maximum mileage out of patching, you should probably make certain your PRAM battery is new/fresh, they generally last about 5 years. Then, DON'T zap the PRAM, reset the NVRAM, or press the CUDA unless you're ready to re-patch immediately. Once you've patched, you're good-to-go and everything is the same as any other Mac that supports LBA48 addressing. There are alternatives to patching the firmware, using Intech's Hi-Cap (hi-capacity) OS X extension, perhaps combined with formating the HD with Intech Speedtools for OS 9 IF you're booting OS 9. The OS 9 formatting only works when BOOTED in OS 9, so BOTH these are needed TOGETHER if your HD had both OS 9 OS X and you dual boot both systems. As a safety practice, it's best to place a partition break at the EXACT 128GB limitation of 131,072 MB. This will act as a safety because if you happen to screw up and erase your patch (or boot from an OS that doesn't have LBA48 support if you use 3rd-party software like the Intech Hi-Cap extension instead of the firmware patch), THEN the non-LBA48 Sawtooth will only see the first 128GB partition, and the area beyond 128GB (the second partition) won't be seen at all, and this will ensure there is no data corruption on either partition of the HD. Once you patch the firmware, as long as the patch is in place, the Mac will act normally like any other Mac that supports LBA48 addressing. The patch doesn't do or undo anything on the HD, it's in firmware, way before even the System software loads. The only way something goes bad is when you have a larger than 128GB HD that's been formatted as full size and it's placed onto a Mac that doesn't support LBA48 addressing AND the system attempts to WRITE to an address on the HD that is BEYOND the maximum 128GB (131,072MB) point. When that happens, the addressing wraps around and starts counting up from zero again. For instance, if it was to try to write to an address at the 160,000 MB point, it would go up to the maximum 131,072 MB point and then wrap back to the 0 MB point and count on up to the 28,928MB point (131,072 + 28,928 = 160,000) and write the 160,000 data over the 28,928 data which corrupts data at that address. This is why having a partition break at 131,072 MB for safety is a good idea. With a partition you can't get any HD data corruption from wrap around writes. There was once a small application that patched the firmware for you, it was called Overdrive and was written by the same guys that wrote Leopard Assist, but it disappeared from the web and I don't know where you could get a copy. Perhaps the Wayback Machine of the Internet Archive has a copy? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: OS9 on MDD; Two Wanted Components Remain
If all else fails just start Toast and choose the optical drive to open or close. Or at system startup keep the mouse button down and all drives will open IIRC. Regards, Jörg. How do you open the primary drive in OS9?
