They seem to be prone to leaking but that's because no one writes the
list to tell us that their liquid cooled G5 ISN'T leaking, we only hear
about the ones that DO leak.

There have been reports that leaving them running keeps the coolant
circulating and thusly prevents corrosion, whether that is true or not I
can't say.

I would not buy one just because of the potential for increased
maintenance and repair, but if I were given one I would seriously
consider replacing the coolant with (mineral?) oil as has been mentioned
on the list before.

2. Is there an inexpensive source, substitute, or work-around, for the

I just got rid of the antennae & HDD mounting screws from my PM G5 on
the swap list, the demand was much greater than I anticipated. That
leads me to think that they are not very easy to find, perhaps Apple of
course but another source might be an independent Apple shop or your
local MUG might have ideas or sources.

Good luck,

Shop around, prices vary from moment to moment, especially with HDs...

OWC (macsales.com)
Geeks
Meritline
Amazon
Cyberguys (great for misc parts, screws, etc)
eBay
eCost (mostly refirbs)
LEM Swap
Craigslist

and don't forget to check the sales brochures from places like Office Despot.

Sales get kindof wonky these days. A few times I've bought nice
Seagate externals, just to pull the drive and stick it in a Mac.
Worked out to be less expensive that way. Then I made a few $ by
selling the case! LOL.

ObBrandRecommendation: Seagate or Hitachi for HDs. Avoid WD
whenever possible.

G5 Questions

2011-01-15 Thread Bruce

Hello,

I have been asked to resurrect four donated G5 computers.
(All are minus hard drive, optical drive, memory, graphics
card, IDE cable, and drive mounting screws).

June 2003 1.6 GHZ SP

June 2004 1.8 GHZ DP

June 2004 2.5 GHZ DP

Early 2005 2.7 GHZ DP

All are clean, otherwise complete, and look to be in good condition.
There is no evidence of any leaking.

Questions:

1. The June 2004 2,5 GHZ DP, and the Early 2005 2.7 GHZ DP, are liquid
cooled.
There are many stories about liquid cooled G5s leaking. What is the
consensus
about the liquid cooled G5s? Are they prone to leaking? Should they be
avoided?
Are there any precautions to take? Does leaving them running all the
time help?

2. Is there an inexpensive source, substitute, or work-around, for the
optical drive,

and hard drive, screws?

Thank you,

Bruce Sugarberg

Re-install OSX in the Mini, and where it asks you if you want to

Could he use firewire disk mode with the new mini and then hook it up
via firewire cable to the g4 and copy stuff that way? That way he
wouldn't need to buy an enclosure for one temporary use.

That wouldn't work since the mini only has a 160GB drive and have double that
on the G4. I guess that the first order of business is to get my raw 500GB
drive into an enclosure so that I can clone the mini's OS etc and then add the
G4's contents. After that, I could either use it as a boot drive externally or
install it into the mini itself which might allow it to run a little faster.

I'm going to order an enclosure today of go by Fry's on Tuesday to see what
they have.

TDM via Firewire is a way to do it with out buying a new external drive. I
somehow got the impression from the OP that he wants a drive for storing and
