Re: g4 mdd getting louder?
Certainly, the dust check is the first thing to do. I've had several MDDs using (without problems) this free developer software: CHUD Tools 3.5.2. Later versions of CHUD don't seem to work for this purpose. Install then access via System Preferences. You can allow nap mode and single processor without noticeable decline in performance. Search Accelerate Your Mac site for details on use in MDD. I get a 40 to 50 degree F. drop in temperature without any hardware changes. I also like Temperature monitor (another freebie.) DVD won't play.
I am having an issue with my burned DVD's not playing on my 2002 QS 933 MHz Mac. I have 1.5 GB of RAM and I have an *NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A drive using Toast Titanium v. 9.0.1 running Mac OS X 10.4.11. The movies play fine on my DVD player for the TV, but I need them to play on my computer so I can learn the guitar parts. These DVD's are owned by my son, but he will not let me use the originals, only the copies. I use MacTheRipper and then DVD2oneX2 to set them up for Toast. I would be most grateful if someone could tell me the settings I need through the process to make them work.* **Thank you in advance. This is what your email looks like on my system: http://dbdev2.pharmacy.arizona.edu/miscjunk/why_styled_mail_sux.png. I may indeed be younger than that now, but unfortunately my eyes are not nearly as hip. This is why mail should be plain text! Second, you can burn them on the system but not play them back?? That's definitely odd. What are the exact errors you get with DVD Player? Third.ly, you should be able to simply use VLC to play the ripped files proicuced by Mac the Ripper, and not bother with the whole burning process at all. IN fact VLC may be able to play the disks too. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Are the DVDs real DVD-Video (like a movie DVD you buy in a shop), or DVD-ROM with movies as files (data) on it? (like a data CD would be) Did you try playing them with VLC? (a free video player and much more, it's free). Please notice VLC 0.9.10 is the last one compatible with OSX 10.4. It could be a problem of codecs missing. VLC has most codecs built-in. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. A lot of the early optical drives have trouble playing burned copies. I would get a newer external drive or a new Pioneer internal IDE drive. That's kindof like saying your car won't go without offering any details -- we can't tell if you lost your keys or forgot to open the garage door! Do the discs not show up on your desktop? Can Finder open them? Can VLC view them? Or is something locking up or ? What error message is being displayed? Be specific, please! Have you tried cleaning your DVD drive? Check both the system.log and console.log for errors, both hard i/o from the drive and soft errors from VLC while it's playing. Why would you rip a dvd then reburn it like that? She reported to me that she'd put it to sleep, and the fans started building up to a crescendo, so I advised her (by phone from work) to hold the power button in until it shut down. The Power Manager was having problems. Replace the Backup/PRAM battery. Before I checked it out, I tried a safe boot to clear caches etc., but it won't boot into safe mode - just the Apple/cogwheel and build-up of fan speed. Then after a 'normal' startup, I looked at System Profiler (and Hardware Monitor), to find CPU B had gone AWOL.
