Are you sure you're using Firefox? IIRC, it doesn't run on Tiger.

If you didn't already, you could try TenFourFox:
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
same code as Firefox,, but adapted to work on older Macs and OSX (thank you
a lot, Cameron! :-).

Oops, the indents on my post were rather confusing. So:
Mark, you say you uss Firefox 17.0.7 on Tiger, but as far as I know, the 
newest version that works in Tiger is 3.6.28
