Yep, I think this right here is the biggest clue to your performance issues,
sadly…modern software presumes a certain amount of computing horsepower, in
terms of CPU and IO.
Thus it has always been; Applewriter ran well in 64K with 360K floppy disks on
my Apple ][+; TextEdit takes 6.1 mb on disk and that doesn’t count that
probably 50% of TextEdit’s code resides in standard OSX libraries elsewhere on
disk. After opening a 2K text file, it takes 14 mb of RAM.
MS Word 2016 preview weighs in at 1.49 GB on disk...
