Knowing the configuration, ie model, OS, etc… will allow list members to give informed advice rather than wild guesses. At this point my best guess would be to reset the pram/nvram. My iMac's display would not wake from sleep when I first got it, turned out to be bad ROM (?) flashed to the logic board. If there is no fix for this is there away to disable the sleep option all together so I don't sleep the Mac by mistake. I'm not sure how pricey a 1GB DDR SO-DIMM is going to be.. Greetings, Eelco. Thanks for the question, looking closer at the G4 iMacs I see that it isn't just the USB 2 models that have an actual 2GB limit. According to Mactracker: 1. The original G4 iMac, was produced Jan 02 - Feb 03. It uses (1) PC133 144 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC133 168 pin SDRAM for a maximum of 1GB RAM total. 2. Was produced Feb 03 - Sep 03. The 15 800MHz model uses the same RAM as V1 above, with the same 1GB limit. 3. Was also produced Feb 03 - Sep 03. The 17 1GHz model, uses (1) PC2100 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2100 184 pin SDRAM. Apple lists the memory limit at 1GB but the actual limit is 2GB. 4. The USB 2 model was produced Sep 03 (Nov 03 for the 20 model) - Jul 04. It uses (1) PC2700 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2700 184 pin SDRAM. In case anyone is wondering why Apple listed some G4 iMacs at 1GB maximum but in reality 2GB is the maximum I think originally each type of RAM was only available up to 512MB per stick for the 1GB limit, but in time higher density 1GB sticks became available and Apple didn't change their specs, maybe to avoid support liability. Then again I could be completely wrong. ;-) In all of the above the SO-DIMM is the user (easily) accessible memory and the SDRAM is the factory (know how to replace thermal paste) memory. These iMacs do not support DDR, and I believe that the memory sticks do not have to be of the same capacity. Yes, I got mixed up again. Sometimes my brain can't distinguish OF from SU. But is it not better to run fsck from SU or a different drive/partition/disc? Like testing RAM in SU rather than the boot volume? Permissions repair will do nothing whatsoever for this issue, since that applies to executable files only. Only things listed in /Library/Reciepts will ever figure into Permissions repair. (and not all of those...PR only ever looks at Apple-supplied files.) I'm generally hesitant to recommend PR but it is possible some important file somewhere has incorrect permissions and is gumming up the works. Can't hurt anyway, better to try every non-destructive possibility before taking more drastic measures. The 2 other partitions of the drive are just fine. I canot open files within a program to acces the drive either, say open up Text Edit and click on that drive to chose a file it simply crashes the application instantly. I can see the drive in Disk Utility and System Profiler. Disk Utility says it is fine when I repair it. I've restarted, shutdown, disconnected and turned on and off the FW drive. Started with the drive on and connected. Started up in Safe mode. Reset PRAM. Nothing. Repaired permissions on the Mac HD, deleted com.apple.finder.plist and still nothing. On that machine it actually makes the Finder Icon and title bar blink infinitely without letting me do anything except disconnect the drive after which all is well. The drive is a 500GB Seagate 7200 rpm OWC Mercury On The Go 2.5 ATA in a FW800/USB2 enclosure connected via FW800. There are 3 180GB partitions. The drive is 2 years old. Can't load youtube with certain browsers, others ok
This is on my Mac Pro, below. I had been using Chromium for Flash sites so that I wouldn't have to install the Flash Player plug-in, but recently, about the time v14 came out, it has stopped loading the youtube page. The youtube logo comes up on the tab, but that's it - no parts of the page load that I can see. So I installed the Flash Player plug-in to go back to how I used to view Flash content. SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, and iCab will load youtube but Camino, Chromium, and Opera will not. Does anyone see a common thread here that I am missing? I should add that Safari works as well. I tested against a new, untouched account and had the same issue, as did my backup disk. Reinstalling SL fixed the issue, which is strange because it seems to have left everything intact - BOINC, LittleSnitch, etc... But it is good to know that a reinstall of SL is painless, unlike earlier versions of OS X. What I can't figure out is why Safari, SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, and iCab will load youtube.com and Opera, Camino, and the newly re-installed Google Chrome will not. Google Chrome hangs with Waiting for ad-g.doubleclick.net... in the status bar and then the Page(s) Unresponsive window pops up. It COULD be that Youtube is changing things on the back end, based on your browser's ID string. Turn on Safari's Developer menu and change your User Agent string and see what happens. I tried Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Camino User Agent strings in Safari and they all loaded youtube.com fine. A larger point is: you have browsers that work, why are you worrying over the ones that won't? Simply because I liked not having Flash in all of my browsers, that was the only reason I started using Chrome in the first place. Any page with Flash that I want to see I drag the url to ShoveBox for later viewing and I avoid Flash issues with my primary browser. Re: Mapping Out Bad Sectors
On 2011/10/04 09:34, John Martz so eloquently wrote: My understanding is it works this way. If the drive attempts to read a sector and the read fails, the sector is marked as pending. It is not remapped under the rational that the read may succeed in the future. So if you see a non-zero value for pending sectors in the drive's SMART data, this is what has happened. If you write to a sector and the write fails THEN the sector is remapped (if possible). This is tallied in the Reallocated Sectors Count, I think. The drives firmware keeps track of the remapping and reads/writes to that sector redirected from that point on to the remapped sector. The gist is that if you have bad sectors and you want to force the drive to remap them you have to write to those sectors. One way to do this is to perform an erase of the drive i.e. write zeros (or whatever) to every sector on the drive. A format in and of itself may do nothing. It all depends on what sectors on the drive the format writes to. FWIW, I'm not sure what the phrase low level format means with any drive sold this century. For quite some time the format of a hard drive is fixed once it leaves the factory and this can't be tinkered with other than remapping bad sectors via the firmware. And, yes, if you have a large number of either pending or reallocated sectors on a drive, it is a cause for concern about the health of the drive. Especially if the number keeps going up. FWIW, I looked this up on Micromat's website and it said that their write zeros function does not map out bad sectors. They suggested using Disk Utility.app, though there may be other 3rd party apps that can do it too. My main concern is if I do a low level reformat with all zeros, and then at a later date reinitialize the drive, would it then lose it's updated map and revert to the factory's map? Their filters are pretty good; perhaps one a week gets thru, if that. I'm not a big Verizon fan, but then I dont have FiOS either. I might be willing to put up with them for that kind of speed. It picksup from the downstairs router using a Belkin 54g USB Network Adapter/Ralink Wireless Utility driver, version 1.2.8.0u. (Note to Kris Tilford: I saw your posts about this awhile back, but I didn't then, and still do not need or want to upgrade it.) 2. G3/800 iBook. Tiger 10.4.11, has built in Airport. I use this to go online a lot and may soon possibly be using it online as much or more than the QS. 3. G4 1.5 GHz Mac Mini. Tiger 10.4.2. I usually don't go online with this machine (it's my dedicated Sims Box), but it does have built-in Airport and on infrequent occasions I do pop open Dashboard (to look at the weather widget) or Safari for a quick informational surf to a Sims forum. 4. My BF's work PC laptop (running Windoze XP) also needs to be able to occasionally join. There is also a small but definite possibility I may play with trying to get my pre-OS X Macs in on it, so it would be NICE if this would work between 7.5.5 and 9.2.2. If you download the manual for your router it should have instructions for password protecting your network (or maybe you have a printed manual?). IIRC the classic Mac OS' only support 802.11b and WEP encryption, which as previously mentioned is less secure than WPA but better than nothing. In fact, nonsense like this usually REDUCES security, because it guarantees that the password gets written down somewhere. It doesn't have to be complex. Sigh. Never EVER EVER rely on a single encrypted source to remember important stuff like passwords. A plain text (as in written on a piece of paper!) backup, locked securely away is important. What if something happens to the encrypted file? You're SOL. (and that goes 10X higher if you're a compamny and it was the root password for the 'Accounts Receivable' DB.) Even a plain text printout of your passwords locked 'securely' away is not completely infallible. I use PasswordWallet and 1Password, both have all the same passwords and they are each backed up three times over, once offsite. Hey look!8-) it's sn0w1ng Macintoshes outside! is AS SECURE as anything RPG will generate, because while it's true that a truly random password string is more secure against cracking, the passphrase chosen is secure enough. And more importantly, I NEVER need to write it down The bestest, mostest random password RPG will ever give you is USELESS if the method of cracking in doesn't involve cracking the password, but a social engineering attack, a MITM attack, a keylogger, etc. Yep, you can't eliminate human mistakes completely. But we do the best we can, trying not to fall for phish attacks, locking the screen when walking away from the machine, being smart about what where you download something, etc… Strong random character passwords are only one ingredient in the security pie. Far too many people fetishize long, random passwords as teh shizzle of computer security, when they're not (and there's not a whole lot of evidence that they've been all that good at preventing compromise in the first place, mainly because of the human element). Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my impression that the longer the password the longer it takes to crack. This is why banks (among other reasons like people using 'password' for their passwords) have moved to multi-factor authentication. you need to enter your username/password AND the little picture needs to be correct; or they use RSA dongles. (themselves hacked at a higher level. RSA*claims* that SecurID is ok, but I'll wager there was a mass need for pants dry-cleaning there...http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2011/03/rsa_security_in.html) I would say that some forms of multi-factor authentication can actually hinder security. My CU switched to using login name, password, and personal information challenge. This has forced me to use the same phrase for all the questions because my favorite movie changes over time, I don't remember my first teacher's name, my mother's maiden name is public record, and so on. IMO this is much more of a hindrance than strong random passwords.
