The 15 800MHz model uses the same RAM as V1 above, with the same 1GB limit. 3. Was also produced Feb 03 - Sep 03. The 17 1GHz model, uses (1) PC2100 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2100 184 pin SDRAM. Apple lists the memory limit at 1GB but the actual limit is 2GB. 4. The USB 2 model was produced Sep 03 (Nov 03 for the 20 model) - Jul 04. It uses (1) PC2700 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2700 184 pin SDRAM. In case anyone is wondering why Apple listed some G4 iMacs at 1GB maximum but in reality 2GB is the maximum I think originally each type of RAM was only available up to 512MB per stick for the 1GB limit, but in time higher density 1GB sticks became available and Apple didn't change their specs, maybe to avoid support liability. Then again I could be completely wrong. ;-) In all of the above the SO-DIMM is the user (easily) accessible memory and the SDRAM is the factory (know how to replace thermal paste) memory. These iMacs do not support DDR, and I believe that the memory sticks do not have to be of the same capacity. I know people that run BOINC on their G5s but they have to shut them down in the summer, they just put out too much heat. And that heat is wasted electricity. Yes, I got mixed up again. Sometimes my brain can't distinguish OF from SU. But is it not better to run fsck from SU or a different drive/partition/disc? On that machine it actually makes the Finder Icon and title bar blink infinitely without letting me do anything except disconnect the drive after which all is well. The drive is a 500GB Seagate 7200 rpm OWC Mercury On The Go 2.5 ATA in a FW800/USB2 enclosure connected via FW800. There are 3 180GB partitions. The drive is 2 years old. I'll be contacting OWC in the morning. It seems odd that two different machines are experiencing the same condition, have you done any maintenance on them recently? Sometimes enabling another service (I don't remember which one) has gotten it working for me. If you want a ready to go solution I recommend OWC's external drive enclosures. Personally I prefer to put my own together using enclosures that have Oxford firewire chips a drive of my choosing. Also it is a good idea to maintain an incremental backup, a la Time Machine, for retrieving data that has been lost or corrupted; and a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! so you can get back up and running quickly in the event of a catastrophic failure. I suspect you're misinterpreting streamed video? YouTube and many other video sites are in the process of conversion away from Flash and to HTML5. During this conversion, most video is available in both formats, and the specific format streamed to your computer is determined by the site dependent upon your browser. It's likely you're getting an HTML5 stream and thinking it's a Flash stream. Can't load youtube with certain browsers, others ok
This is on my Mac Pro, below. I had been using Chromium for Flash sites so that I wouldn't have to install the Flash Player plug-in, but recently, about the time v14 came out, it has stopped loading the youtube page. The youtube logo comes up on the tab, but that's it - no parts of the page load that I can see. So I installed the Flash Player plug-in to go back to how I used to view Flash content. SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, and iCab will load youtube but Camino, Chromium, and Opera will not. Does anyone see a common thread here that I am missing? I should add that Safari works as well. I tested against a new, untouched account and had the same issue, as did my backup disk. Reinstalling SL fixed the issue, which is strange because it seems to have left everything intact - BOINC, LittleSnitch, etc... But it is good to know that a reinstall of SL is painless, unlike earlier versions of OS X. I am familiar with ClickToFlash but it just seemed better to keep Flash in just the one browser. It would help if you lived in a cool climate though, it really pumps out the heat and runs up the utility bill. My Mac Pro (below) use about half the electricity that my 2.0GHz G5 DP did and is significantly faster running multi-CPU process's. If you zero out a hard drive with Disk Utility to map out the bad blocks, are they notated in a permanent fashion or will a simple reformat lose the bad block map. One way to do this is to perform an erase of the drive i.e. write zeros (or whatever) to every sector on the drive. A format in and of itself may do nothing. It all depends on what sectors on the drive the format writes to. FWIW, I'm not sure what the phrase low level format means with any drive sold this century. For quite some time the format of a hard drive is fixed once it leaves the factory and this can't be tinkered with other than remapping bad sectors via the firmware. And, yes, if you have a large number of either pending or reallocated sectors on a drive, it is a cause for concern about the health of the drive. Especially if the number keeps going up. FWIW, I looked this up on Micromat's website and it said that their write zeros function does not map out bad sectors. They suggested using Disk Utility.app, though there may be other 3rd party apps that can do it too. My main concern is if I do a low level reformat with all zeros, and then at a later date reinitialize the drive, would it then lose it's updated map and revert to the factory's map? The vers from SL and Lion seem to be better - and more stable. *shrug* I've not had good luck with Migration Assistant in the past either, however Carbon Copy Cloner SyncTwoFolders have worked very well for me. If you do use a tool such as this be sure the settings are exactly what you want, one wrong setting can create a nightmare. Software needs brought me back to 10.5, but this time I did an Archive Install, instead of an Upgrade install and I haven't had the problem since. So my question would be, did you install Leopard as an upgrade or as an archive? If it was an upgrade, you might try doing a clean install or an archive install, backing up your data first of course. Their filters are pretty good; perhaps one a week gets thru, if that. I'm not a big Verizon fan, but then I dont have FiOS either. I might be willing to put up with them for that kind of speed. I have two Gmail and two AOL accounts and I see very little spam, nothing like I did say five years ago. Not complaining a bit either. Far too many people fetishize long, random passwords as teh shizzle of computer security, when they're not (and there's not a whole lot of evidence that they've been all that good at preventing compromise in the first place, mainly because of the human element). Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my impression that the longer the password the longer it takes to crack. This is why banks (among other reasons like people using 'password' for their passwords) have moved to multi-factor authentication. you need to enter your username/password AND the little picture needs to be correct; or they use RSA dongles. My CU switched to using login name, password, and personal information challenge. This has forced me to use the same phrase for all the questions because my favorite movie changes over time, I don't remember my first teacher's name, my mother's maiden name is public record, and so on. IMO this is much more of a hindrance than strong random passwords. I had to fax the receipt to Apple before they would acknowledge the warranty. I don't know why faxing was accepted and emailing wasn't, but apparently Apple has a reason.
