You didn't tell us which model your Mac is.
When troubleshooting, one should give two info first: Mac model and OSX
version he's using.

Anyway I think your Mac (iMac? Mac Pro?) could maybe better run with an
older OSX version, like Snow Leopard (10.6) or Mavericks (10.9).

With an older version you might be more exposed to malware.
OTOH, your Mac should likely be faster, less memory-hungry, and you might be
more lucky with running older software and hardware.

If your hard disk is big enough, you could create another partition and
install the older OSX there. This way you cold boot into each OSX, according
to what you need to do.

There might be some conflict between the system on your internal HDD and the
USB card.

If you can, try removing the USB card and check if boot goes ok: then you
know where the problem lies.
If that's the case, you might try to reinstall OSX; maybe some driver or
whatnot got lost or corrupted, hence the conflict.

The OP problem is definitely NOT an HDD failure.

Even if the HDD was toast, the Mac would not shutdown: it would say "I can't
find any boot disk" - or something like that.
And if the HDD was corrupted, the Mac would show the folder icon with a
flashing question mark (meaning "Cannot find a valid system to boot").

This is unlikely to work (since the issue seems hardware-related), but it's
worth a shot.

It's puzzling.
If it was an hardware problem (e.g. a faulty memory chip), it should give a
warning, like some beeps or power light flashing.
It could be an issue with the power supply, but it doesn't seem likely.

It makes me think about overheating: something gets hotter and hotter, until
it just stops working.
It could be a fan not spinning anymore, or an issue with the CPU (the
thermal paste non connecting anymore, the spring keeping the CPU and
heatsink together is broken...).
A CPU not properly cooled will overheat in a matter of minutes. Hence the
shutdown.
I can't remember if G4s had thermal sensors. I'm now used to Intel iMacs
with lots of sensors.

Did you open the case and check if anything comes loose, or the fans are all
spinning?

Valter

G5s were a beautiful piece of hardware.
BUT they were relatively unreliable (soldering, water-cooling, PSU...), and
they are way less powerful that subsequent Intel Macs. Besides, they suck
power like crazy. :-D

I had a 2.7 GHz dual processor with liquid cooling. Great machine, no doubt
about it, and a delight to expand; but IIRC its power consumption was around
300 W (my 2009 iMac 24" consumes just around 100 W, screen included), and
one day the Ram soldering went kaputt.

Basing on my experience, if you really use your Mac everyday, adopting an
Intel one is way better than a previous one.
OTOH, if you just want to tinker with it, you'll likely love a G5 :-)

Either the UPS did something wrong, or it was just bad luck: when you
switched it on again, the G4's power supply just decided it was its final
straw. Sometimes it's just coincidence.

But I would test that UPS on something cheap, to check if it's defective
(and if it is, and it's under warranty, maybe you could get some money from
APC).

> There is no way of telling what the damage is.
Simplest way would be to insert a working power supply and see if the G4 is
ok. But find one could be hard.

I know there are info on the Net about using an ATX power supply (for PCs)
on G4s. I don't know how difficult that is.

This definitely looks like an USB problem. If those devices run through an
USB hub, maybe it's the hub. Or it could be the USB card.

Try a different USB port, a different hub, or a different USB card.

Well, yes and no.

As long as the backup happened BEFORE the malware started encrypting your
HD, the backup would contain the malware (Transmission 2.90 in this case),
but its data would remain clean, NOT encrypted.
The encryption happens only (AFAIK) when the malware is active and running,
not just because the malware is on a disk.

Hence, you could clean your Mac's HD, remove the malware from the backup,
and restore the backup; and everything should be fine.
Of course I would keep an eye on which Transmission version I would be
running.

As others have noted, backup disks can easily be compromised by malware when
they are connected 24/7. As long as a a disk is on its own (not connected),
no software can alter its content whatsoever.

A good backup strategy would be having an always-connected backup disk (e.g.
using Time Machine), and another disk for periodic backups (e.g. once a
week), maybe stored offsite.
This strategy would offer the safety of both an up-to-date backup, and a
backup safe from whatever is happening to your computer right now (be it
malware, a thief, fire, etc.).

 You need an antenna, apparently.

My experience says it isn't so.
I used a G5 DP 2,7 GHz for a couple years: it had the Airport card, but no
antenna.

In my case, the G5 always detected the card, and it was even able to use it,
but it had a meager receptivity: only if the source signal was within a
meter, it could receive anything.

Hence, I think the OP problem is not about the missing antenna (although the
antenna would be probably needed to properly use the card).

But the issue could be from a different (non Apple) software as well, maybe

I also noticed it won't restart either. It hangs at the

This makes sense: to restart, it needs to shutdown the system first.

Is it a Mac-compatible card, or just a regular PC (Windows) card?
If the latter, it's likely its behavior is flaky: I had more than one

OK, so I have finally accepted that my eMac has outlived it's usefulness and
needs to be retired. My question is what to replace it with?
Knowing your budget would help to target our suggestions.

Cost is a big consideration, so I am probably limited to a core 2 duo iMac or
 Mac Mini.
I would advice for an iMac.
Where I live (Italy), used Mac Minis are way too expensive, while I found
lots of valid iMacs at reasonable prices. YMMV.

I got a 2009 3 GHz 24 iMac. And I love every bit of it. :-)
The screen is gorgeous, the design is sleek, the noise is almost
non-existent, the power is abundant (Adobe CS3 and 3D games go smoothly),
and power consumption is surprisingly low.

If you already have a good screen, the Mini could be an option, but since
you have an eMac, the iMac seems the best way to go.

Unfortunately my entire Adobe collection of software will still be
expecting a PPC to drive it, so I understand I will need an Intel machine
 which has access to Rosetta
On my iMac I installed 10.6 Snow Leopard, because:
- I have PPC software too (and it runs beautifully here)
- I dislike latest, iOS-like OSX versions and their interface.

I never feel the lacking of a newer OS.

Additionally, many of my peripherals are FireWire 400
Up until Mid-2011 models, any iMac had at least 1 Firewire port.
Even if it's 800, you just need an 800-400 cable to hook up your
peripherals.

In OS9, though, the right-click won't be recognized by default (you can use

I'm not sure about Classic: if the input is managed by OSX (as I think), it

The only problem arises when the mouse have additional buttons or

AFAIK, Microsoft and Logitech are the only input devices' big manufacturers

What could be missing on the G5? Any idea why the difference?

Generic icons usually means the OS doesn't know what those files are,
hence it doesn't know what to do with them.

The OS keeps a list of association (don't know the right term) to link
file extensions or file types to the kind and the application it will use to
open files.
Maybe the G5's OS lost the association for the JPEG. Maybe some app mangled
that.

Anyway (if I get your problem correctly), to tell to the OS what the file
has to be associated with, in the Finder you select the file and call Get
Info (File menu).
On the subsequent window, in the Open with popup menu, you select the

AFAIK it's not a G5 thing. I've used an old G5 for a couple years, with two
drives in it, and never got any SMART notice.
Besides, and more important, I never heard of any significant amount of
SMART messages about G5s.

Since you checked those drives in Ubuntu, they're probably fine, but I
wouldn't use them on anything critical before finding where the problem is.

Most likely, the problem is in your G5.
It could be software-related (some part of the OS got flaky), or
hardware-related (the drive controller or something).

You can try the following:
- Create another user account, switch to it, try again inserting the HDs.
- If you have another partition available, or another drive to insert,
install OSX anew and boot from it: if the problem is software related, it
should disappear.
You could even use one of those drive to install OSX anew on it: if
everything works, it's likely the drive is fine.

FWIW, in my longish experience with computer hardware (20+ years), and
several dead HDs, most of the times the failing drives manifest some problem
(weird noises, failure at reading, system errors, no boot...) before really
being dead for good.
In most cases, I had a chance to recover most (if not all) the data from the
drive before it was just a brick.

Sometimes, though, a drive can be dead with no previous sign.
Being such delicate mechanisms, there's several things that can (and do) go
bad inside them.

Anyway, I support others' advice to check the drive outside its enclosure,
before giving up hope.

Sometimes, connecting external drives can be ... odd.
Just recently I had a couple drives that worked fine when connected to a
computer, but they didn't even show up when connected to another one.
Yet, HD interfaces should be amongst the most standard things.
Baffling. :-|

When I got a second-hand G5, it missed both the hard-drive and those special

Since they are pretty expensive, I just screwed four normal hard-drives
screws in the drive's sides, taking care that one of the 6 screw' side was
horizontal (they usually have hexagonal heads), and inserted the drive that
way.

The drive worked flawlessly for almost 2 years (until the G5's motherboard
had the infamous memory controller fault), thus I think you don't really
need anything more.

Of course, YMMV. The rubber screws are better for isolating the drive from
the computer vibrations but, being mine a liquid-cooled G5, vibrations (and
noise) were almost non-existing.

Really stable and efficient OSX version.

So, unless you have specific issues against it, I'd suggest going for 10.4.

You can google 23 cinema display capacitors and see if some page helps you
troubleshooting your problem.

I disconnected the dead monitor and all its cables from the Mac.
Are you sure there's no adapter still connected to the video card?
It may trick the card into thinking a monitor is still there.

When I open some windows, they go off the visible screen and open
somewhere on the invisible one, on the non-existent monitor, and I can't
 get at them.
Using the display menulet (the icon on the top menu bar), can you change the
resolution of the ghost monitor, to a smaller one?
This way, windows opening there might be still visible on the main monitor
and movable.

That's the best that I can think of right now. :-)

Of course, if you have a real, working second monitor around, you might
connect that one, moving the new windows onto your main screen, and
disconnect it to see if the problem goes away.
If you have a friend nearby with a lousy PC, this may be the time the PC

You're right about Rosetta being gone with Lion and after.

My question is: What machine version, (iMac or portable) even if it had to
dual boot, would both give me the ability to use Rosetta for the old apps and
offer the most improved speed and functionality for the future?
I'm currently using an Early 2009 iMac 24. I got it after my G5 gave up.

This iMac is a beauty, the screen is gorgeous, it's pretty fast (although
the processor is still Core 2 Duo, not i5/i7 yet), and it runs CS3 just fine
(3D games like BioShock or Half-Life 2 run beautifully, too).
Previous iMac models had some reliability problem (especially with the
faster graphic cards), but I think 2008 models and later are very reliable.

If you don't need the portability of a laptop, the iMac is a better, safer
and cheaper way. I just love mine. :-)
i5/i7 processors are of course faster, but if you want to save some dollar,
any iMac from 2007-2008 onwards is fine, I think.

BTW, CS3 is Universal.
But this iMac with Snow Leopard runs any PPC software fine, too.

between the two slots blocks, on the right to them) with a hair dryer (a
couple minutes), and this made the G5 boot and work for some time (15-45'
usually).

It seems many computers made around 2003-2005 had this oncoming problem, due
to lead-free solder (Google lead-free solder g5 problem).
One of the suggested trick was the hair dryer one (it makes the solders
contacts temporarily working).

In your case, you might have the picky Ram issue many mentioned here, or
you might have an issue similar to mine.
I wish you good luck. ;-)

Prior to this problem, the memory controller's temperature was always high
(around 75° C), thus it's likely that contributed to the subsequent failure.

Lastly, the Macs recognize startup sequences (like Command-S for single user

No it's not, because both last night and right now the G5 is working.

Thus I think the problem lies in the soldering; the lead-free BGA solder has
become flaky. Heating it with the hair dryer seems making it stable again
(for a while, at least).
Of course, the high temperature of the chip - and consequent stress - only
makes the problem worse.

Check the heat sink and make sure it's not slipped off. Consider removing it,
reapplying thermal paste, reseating the heat sink and putting it through ASD
to make sure there is no permanent damage, assuming it boots.
Good advice but, as I said before, I consider disassembling the G5 my last
possible chance.
Since right now it's working (thanks to the hair dryer trick), I don't
want the burden and the risk to disassemble it and - maybe - break something
else. :-/

I was looking for an advice to improve the U3 temp, *without* disassembling
the whole shebang. :-)

in around fifty percent of cases.

Well, looks like I was lucky. :-)
Right now I'm writing this on my G5, that is born again. :-D

I tried everything with the Ram sticks (moving them, cleaning, swapping,
trying different sticks), no way. Ok, I knew it wasn't the Ram.

Then I used my hair dryer on each memory bank, and on the memory controller
chip (actually, on its back, since it's located onto the inner side of the
logic board).
Around 3 minutes of blowing hot air on each part, and hey!, the trick
worked!
Knock on wood, I don't know how long it will last. But I was able to backup
my recent stuff, so I'm an happy camper anyway.

I think it was the memory controller, partly because it has always been
really hot, between 70 and 75 degrees Celsius (checking with Marcel
Bresink's Temperature Monitor).
For a comparison, both CPU dies are around 50° C or less.

The funniest thing is, this problem occurred just the day after I decided to
buy an used iMac!
Maybe the G5 got jealous! ;-)

I was planning to sell the G5 afterwards, but now I'm doubtful; I don't want
to sell a lemon. OTOH, the repair was pretty straightforward (once I knew
what to do), so I could sell it informing the buyer about this caveat.
If the problem is going to show up once or twice a year, I think it's
bearable; after all, from the dozens post I read about it, this issue can
happen to any G5.

Thank you to everybody for you suggestions and advice.

I'm currently using a G5 DP 2.7 GHz, I got it used 1,5 years ago.
Great machine: fast, very silent (liquid cooled), easy to access its
innards, very stable (I'm using it with OSX Tiger).
Its only drawback, so far, it's power hungry: it draws from 160 Watts (idle)
to over 300 Watts!

It's way faster than the G4 Digital Audio (originally 667 MHz, upgraded with
a 1.4 GHz CPU) that I had before. A big step forward.
If your QS felt slow, I suggest going for a G5 (2.0 GHz or above): you won't
need to change your software (no OS9 boot, though!), but it will be
snappier.
Depending on where you are, I think G5s start from 100-150$ and up.
Definitely worth a check.

Regarding realiability, I read G5s with Delphi liquid cooling are
troublesome, but mine has a Delphi one, and so far - knock on wood! - it
runs flawlessly.
I think it's a matter of luck. If you don't feel like gambling ;-) better go
with an air-cooled one (the 2.3 GHz DP seems the best choice).

AFAIK, quite the contrary: according to MacTracker, first generation MDDs

Perhaps the design became more power-efficient; I don't know if the two PS

I don't know about your 9000 card, but I think 64MB are more than enough to
drive high-res monitor and/or dual monitors (as long as the card has two
ports). I did run dual monitors (21 and 15) on a meager 32MB Geforce 2 MX.

Unless for larger monitor you mean a 30 display or such (that might
require a beefier card).

I agree; this suggestion was not meant to make you run an handicapped Mac
;-) but to make absolutely sure the problem was about not enough power.
Once you knew it was that (or not), you could think about something else.

From what you reported, anyway, I don't think the problem is lack of power.
But IMO is worth making the above check, just to be sure.

The fact is, I ran all of the above with the stock 9000 card and an Apple
ADC 23 inch monitor, without a hitch. For a while I even ran a 5th hard
drive in the machine with no problems. Now that monitor draws its power
from the machine. Wouldn't the absence of the ADC monitor drawing power be
some sort of compensation for the power needs of the 9800?
Yes and no. A 23 monitor should draw around 40W; the 9800 obviously needs
more.

The 9800 must be some kind of monster power hog
From what I gathered on the Net, it should draw around 75W under normal
conditions (maybe more when running 3D intensive applications).

It seems as though the MDD really *likes* having an ADC monitor connected
 to it.
Maybe something got stuck in the power mangement unit.
Did you try to reset the PMU? ( Power Management Unit)
See Apple's page:

Well, it seems having to do with hot (re)start.
Letting it cool down (even just a bit), seems helping;but I cannot think
what heat has to do with it.
Unplugging might reset something or let a memory chip lose its content;
but, again, doesn't make much sense.

Only thing I can think of, when the Mac is starting, the 9800 could
compete with the hard drive (on the same power line) for power, since hard
drives need the most power when spinning up; once it has started, the
shared power is enough for both to work.
What else is connected on the same power line where you put the splitter?
Did you try to put the splitter on the optical drive's power line? (it
should not require power at boot).

Is the 9800 just too much card for the MDD?
I think that 9800 Pro was made for G4 and G5 Macs, so it *should* work.

I wonder what could be wrong in your MDD's power department.
Have you got many peripherals inside it (HDs, cards...) that are sucking
power? Maybe the power supply is overloaded.

The keys action is good enough (far from the old ADB Apple Extended

Of course, for using the additional keys (some are even programmable) you
have to install the Microsoft driver, that's available for OSX but not OS9.
In OS9 the keyboard works fine, but the additional keys don't work (of

I agree that Micro$oft is not the nicest company in the world ;-) but their

You can look around for a Microsoft or Logitech keyboard that has OSX

Will an add-on USB Keyboard function the same at startup?
My MS keyboard works fine on startup, when pressing special keys like

I have a Sony monitor very similar to yours (mine is an E500).
I do not notice on my monitor the same problem you are experiencing, thus I

IMO, though, there IS a glass panel in front of the actual CRT, because I
think a CRT cannot be completely flat as the monitor appears.
Hence, it could be some dust infiltrated between the CRT and that glass; I
know some iMac (G5/Intel) had this problem, dust infiltrating underneath the
screen (static energy on the screen obviously helps).

Although, looking for monitor dust inside on Google, it looks like the
dust problem affects much more the LCD displays than it does with the CTRs.

No Apple displays.

Second, calibrate your 'Kill-a-watt' clone, plug something like a vacuum

Yeah, I read a similar suggestion and that's what I did: plugging another

It's been much more reliable.

PowerMac G5 power consumption

2012-09-27 Thread Valter Prahlad
Some time ago, someone wondered here about G5 power consumption.

Today I measured all of my electronical equipments' consumption (I can be
quite OCD :-), and here's my find.
PowerMac G5 DP 2.7 GHz liquid cooled (Early 2005), with a Radeon 9600 XT
graphic card, OSX 10.4.11 (# = Watts):

- Off = 17
- Just Finder (idle, no app loaded) = 160
- TenFourFox + Outlook Express (idle) = 170
- Outlook Express (using) = 170-300
- Entourage (using ) = 170-180
- Call of Duty 2 = 310

I was astonished to discover it sucks 17 Watts when off! :-o
WTF! Does he think electrons are free?!? ;-D
I wonder what the hell is consuming all that power when off... :-?

Also interesting it's that, when using Outlook Express (within Classic), the
burden on the CPU can be as intensive as playing Call of Duty 2!

For comparison, my PC with a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz CPU and a Radeon 9550 graphic
card, takes 7 Watts when off, 60 Watts on idle, and 135 Watts running
3DMark03 (an intensive graphic benchmark). Less than half the G5 (although
that PC is a small form factor, thus designed for lower consumption).

I got the G5 for free... but I'm afraid I'm repaying it through my power
bills! ;-D

the power strip, the power adapter, ot some of the cables.

You could also try to remove the battery. My PowerBook G4 is able to run

Best thing to do would be to try the iBook with an alternative power

We need to know if the problem lies in that specific drive or placement, or
in presence of all the drives.
3 HD and an optical might be too much for the power supply? Do you have many
PCI cards inserted? (they can suck power as well, especially a fast graphic
card)

So, I'm guessing either the power supply is going bad or the primary ATA
connector, unless someone has some other ideas? If it is the power supply,
you think I'm okay to keep using it with the good spare connector
If things change just using a different power connector, it should have
nothing to do with the power supply: it should be a failing connector (but
that should fail the boot process, not make the G4 switch off - unless
there's a short circuit!).

Then you can try to identify the problematic card.

Sometimes peripherals interfere with the booting process.
Also, if you have additional PCI cards, try temporarily removing them.

I wonder if that CD is specific to some Mac, and not suitable for yours.

If you mean the G3 does its chime, and the three beeps (bongs?), AFAIK it
means the RAM did not pass the startup memory test.

How long has your G3 had its current array of RAM?
If you just added RAM, that Ram is probably bad.
If the same RAM has been installed for a while and the problem just started,
try removing and reseating the RAM modules in case one worked loose in
transit or from a bump.

If you have more than one RAM module, try removing one (at a time) and see
if the problem repeats. That's one way to isolate a suspicious module.

How can do the “Open withŠ³ magic under pre-Mac OS X?
Files without association are missing the Creator/Type metadata (two 4
character codes, used by MacOS to identify which app using to open the file,
and the kind of content).
As said, you can drag the file onto the app icon (or its alias), but you can
set the file's Creator/Type as well with a utility: I used TypeShuffler back
then, and I loved it; it was freeware (at least up to 1.0.2)

TypeShuffler is a drag and drop utility that allows you to change the file
type and creator codes of files that are dropped on top of it. TypeShuffler
provides you with a configurable database of creator codes so that you can
easily change files to a common file type and creator.

A similar tools: FileType http://www.frederikseiffert.de/filetype/

Okay. So 9.2.2 it shall be.
In my own experience (on a G3/450), OS 8.6 was sensibly faster than 9.2.2.
Thus, if you want to squeeze the maximum speed from your G3, I'd keep a
partition with 8.6 (try yourself, anyway, you might not feel the speed
difference I perceived).

The .ttf and .otf files are now in the fonts folder, but the fonts
are not available in Microsoft Word 2001.
Microsoft apps have their own (not standard) way to handle fonts.
To check if the fonts are recognized by the system, try with a vanilla
text editing app like SimpleText.

particular issue).
I had the very same Mac years ago, and I loved it dearly. :-)

 64MB/4GB HD/24x CD/MSO
After you solve the issue, I'd suggest you to add some more ram: 64MB is
pretty tight. 256 or, better, 512MB, and OS8 should fly.

You can use common PC Ram sticks, SDRam Dimm, PC66, PC100 or PC133 (that's
the Ram's max clock: for your G3 PC66 is advised, but I used PC133 for years
with no problem).
You can usually find them for cheap or even for free, from dismissed old PCs
(if you can roam at a local recycling/scrap area, you'll find plenty).
You could find there bigger HDs as well; easy to install and reformat as Mac
disks.

PS: What's MSO?

 OS 8.5
Another easy and useful update, go to MacOS 8.6.
It was more stable and complete than 8.5 (and really fast; faster than OS
9.2.2).

Machine has been out of use for a couple of years. Rebooted it this
 morning, screen message came up:

³Your computer crashed or was not shut down properly the last time it
was used. Your startup disk is being checked by Disk First Aid, and
 any problems will be repaired.²
This is normal: usually, DFA does its job and then booting resumes.

Mouse arrow appeared on screen alongside this message but arrow would
not respond when I moved mouse control to click the proceed box. I
remembered during regular use before that this would normally clear
 message and boot up machine.
Pressing Enter or Return on the keyboard should also press the
selected on-screen button (you can also try Esc, if they do not).

Regarding the not moving mouse pointer:
- Is the mouse a regular Apple mouse, or a third-party one?
(third-party might require a loaded extension to work)
- AFAIK, this should not happen on your G3, but on some Macs a dead PRam
battery would create problems on boot. Yours is likely dead (they last
approx 5 years), so you might replace it just in case.
--- 3.6v Lithium 1/2 AA PRAM Battery, usually at around 5$.

HTH. Let us know how is going.
