Re: NVIDIA Quadro4 750 XGL firmware hack to run on G4 933Mhz Quicksilver?

2012-02-11 Thread turn
Ah... here is some info on a very similar card .. the Quadro 700 XGL
working on a Mac... so I might have a chance:
 - http://themacelite.wikidot.com/kext-mod

There is a firmware for the 700 XGL too which might work:
http://themacelite.wikidot.com/wikidownloads2

Not sure if the speed differences will be something I have to be
concerned about.

If anyone's done these sorts of "hacks" please let me know if there
are things I need to be careful about.

Thanks!

NVIDIA Quadro4 750 XGL firmware hack to run on G4 933Mhz Quicksilver?

2012-02-09 Thread turn
I've got my hands on a Quadro4 750 XGL, an AGP 4x graphics card, and
wanting to see if I can make it work on a 2002 QS G4 933mhz machine.

Anyone heard of getting the Quadro4's working?

According to http://guides.macrumors.com/NVIDIA_Quadro -- the Quadro
line is very similar to the Geforce.

One fellow apparently was able to convert a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX/
SLI card to work as a Quadro FX 4500 but I am thinking I will need to
re-flash this card the other way to get some firmware that is
supported... I just have no idea what that might be.

See http://themacelite.wikidot.com/fx4500

Also for reference:
 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units
 - http://themacelite.wikidot.com/nvidia-geforce
 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Quadro --- says here that the
chipset use in the Quadro4 750 XGL is also used in the GeForce 4 Ti
4400.

~~~
There is Geforce 4 Ti 4400 ROM modified for PPC here:
http://themacelite.wikidot.com/wikidownloads2  - so I am wondering if
anyone thinks it might work to just flash with that. -?
MPEG Streamclip should do it.  If the current version is not PPC
PC133 RAM in 933 G4 Quicksilver 2002 (QS2000) -- just like they said -- no ECC RAM support
2011-12-29 Thread turn
I'm sure anyone who has experience with this will know this already,
and many might even say "I'd told you so", but I'd like to confirm
that using PC133 CL3 ECC RAM in a G4 QS2002 -- DOES NOT WORK.
I was suspicious that I might be able to use one stick of non-ECC RAM
and then the other two sticks of ECC and that the motherboard ram
controller might somehow see the non-ECC RAM and just work.  Well it
doesn't.  No combination tested so far allows any of the ECC RAM to
work in the machine.  Adding just one stick, in any order, with or
without non-ECC RAM prevents the machine in booting.
For kicks I tried the ECC RAM in a blue-and-white G4 (not sure if it
was 350Mhz or 450Mhz) -- zilch.  Didn't work either.
I had been a bit hopeful because I found online someone's comment that
they had used ECC ram in their G4 Cube successfully.
Also I have noticed that in my G4 QS2002 that if I used three sticks
of CL2 memory the machine was crashing but that if I put that same CL2
memory in with one stick of CL3 the machine apparently slowed down all
the memory access and I had no problems then with that CL2 memory.
Anyway... thought that documenting this clear test might help somebody
some grief someday.
I tried ECC sticks from Micron, Samsung, and one or two others.  None
worked.  The irony is that when it was new ECC memory was more
expensive and now, apparently because so many servers have been
decommissioned, the used RAM market has much cheaper ECC memory than
the non-ECC.
Now if someone can come up with a hack to let me de-solder part of the
ECC stick to turn it into a non-ECC... that would be fantastic!
This was my thought also. Be sure to use a very limited amount of
paste if you do repaste it.
Please let us know what you do find might be the problem.
(The long ADB cabling issue sounds problematic also.)
Re: Installer for patched KeyLargoATA.kext for limited large drive support in pre-QS2002 G4 Power Macs
2011-04-17 Thread turn
Yes I am very interested in a driver that will let me easily see large
hard drives on Quicksilver G4's!
Question: I've got a QS2002 800Mhz machine with a bad IDE controller.
I put in a VTS Ultra/Tek 66 and now I am able to boot and the machine
doesn't erratically hang up any longer.  Do you think your kext will
work with the Ultra/TEK 66 to get large hdd support?
Re: 3rd party wireless pci card for MDD
2011-02-15 Thread turn
re: " Broadcom 4318 modules which I have purchased on ePrey (sic) from
a Hong Kong-based seller"
Can you share link to a PCI card from China that is known to have
Broadcom modules?
I purchased one to test -- it worked great -- then bought 12 more for
a lab and they all didn't work because they had different mini-PCI
cards under the same labeled slot.  Ugh.  I know if I can find a
reliable supplier with Broadcom mini-PCI modules I'd be set... these
cards were like $8- each... very appealing for a lab.
PPC kext repository?
2011-01-02 Thread turn
There seems to be a lot of Intel kext development going on in the
hackintosh community.
Does anyone know of *any* open source or other public domain or
publicly available kext PPC development?
If drive source code is available how difficult it PPC kext
development?
I am mostly thinking about drivers for PCI cards: via chipset USB
card, multiport NIC cards, SATA/PATA cards, and WiFi cards.  There are
a lot of inexpensive PCI components coming out now but still most are
not supported on my G4.  Seems if drivers could be ported it would
extend the usefulness of the machines.
Does anyone have a repository of PPC kexts?
867Mhz G4 Quicksilver - 10.5.8 OS semi-hangs after running System Profiler
2010-12-14 Thread turn
Anyone know why a G4 would sort-of hang up when trying to quit System
Profiler?  It looks like Finder has just quit since when I bring up
"Force Quit Applications" NOTHING is listed (but I can still see the
words "System Profiler" in the upper right).
Brand new install of 10.5.8 on a freshly formatted drive.  I've tried
different RAM.  At one point I thought it was a RAM problem... ran
Rember for two days straight with no lock ups then added a third
memory stick had the hanging OS problem.  I went back the exact same
config that test for two days and tried System Profiler and got the
hanging problem again.
Anyone experience something weird OS hanging problems like this?
Seems very intermittent.
I tried to update the firmware but apparently G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz
has no firmware update that is available (MDD has one and the 933Mhz
does but not the 867 -?)
The mouse moves around fine... I can bring up the Force Quit dialog
(with nothing in it) but none of the menus will respond and the hard
drive won't "open" when I click on it... is my motherboard just
flaking out?
