Re: Still looking...

for a dedicated dlna client for OS X; ppc or intel. I'm desperate.

Anyone know of a solid dedicated UPnP/DLNA *client*? I say dedicated
because I've tried VLC and don't really like it for that purpose. This
will run on 10.5.8, if you know of an intel app, that will be good for
 research as well.

There is an older version of mediacloud that is on this site for download.

http://archive.keymolen.com/legacy/hmediamac.html

It states it will run on 10.4 or 10.5 Intel Mac.

The newer version states 10.6

Everything else I can find requires 10.6

Re: Unresponsive script warning on Facebook

2013-08-01 Thread James Carroll
I get this message every time I try to use Facebook:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You
can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will
 complete.

 Script:
 https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yw/r/eNJGemJDFDG.js:43

I'm on a PPC mac mini running 10.5.9, using TenFourFox as my browser. A
friend said something about script runtime? I ran OnyX and cleared my
 cache
 and cookies. Didn't help.

I have gotten those from time to time on my 2011 mini with firefox. It
means just what it says. There is a script on the page that for whatever
reason will not run in your browser. It usually is because the java for
your machine is not up to date or you lack some plugin. I usually just
click to kill the script and the page may still be viewable but since I
don't facebook I can't say how that works. I think the most likely thing
is that the java installation on your ppc machine is not up to date and I
don't know that there is anything you can do to fix that. I could be
wrong though as my quad g5 is suffering from water cooler problems and
not working at the moment so I've not used TenFourFox in a while.

Re: MDD G4 Power supply recomendations?

2013-02-20 Thread James Carroll

 Hey Joe and others:

There is a New York company that rebuilds/repairs the G4 MDD power
supply. Just use Google to search for New York, G4 MDD, rebuild Power
Supply. They want about $80 for the job.

 Bob

According to their website National Ram Electronics no longer repairs
Apple power supplies except for ones that are still under their warranty.

Re: MDD G4 Power supply recomendations?

2013-02-19 Thread James Carroll
One by one, my MDD G4 collection has seen their power supplies fail.
It seems the exact form factor is not available as a new product, only
used. Which is tough, as it would probably fail soon anyway.

Anyone have experience replacing these? Any advice on best model to fit
 inside the MDD case?

I have one with a dying Power Supply as well. I've been researching with
Google and one guy has a write up where he carves up the existing PS case
and install the guts from an ATX PS into it. It looks pretty good when
he's done but it's not for the non-technical user to do. I've also seen
people just tie strap an ATX into the case and splice the motherboard
connector from the old power supply onto it. Not elegant but workable.
ATX power supplies don't have the 25 volts needed for an ADC monitor but
most people don't use those anyway. If you do need it there is a guy on
ebay that sells rebuilt original MMD power supplies. Not cheap but a
fair price.

Re: Good external hard drive?

2011-10-29 Thread James Carroll
Following the recommendations of a number of people on the list I
bought a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard
Drive STAC1000100 (Black). I erased it per Time Machine and it works
great. My thanks to all who commented or made suggestions. This list
 is invaluable!

I bought a GoFlex Desk 2 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive and it works
well. I got it at Best Buy for $99 then, a week after I bought it I was
cruising Best Buy again and found the Firewire Flex Adapter on sale there
for 15 bucks. I changed it out and it went from good to unbelievable.
FW800 really makes it shine. This is what's great about the Flex. I
find that all my computers both linux and macs work better with firewire
drives.

Re: New iMac

2011-08-21 Thread James Carroll

It (Lion) is by far the most reliable incarnation of MacOS X yet
 released.

Not everyone seems so enamored of it. I've read a few negative comments
and not all that many are positive. I can't say as it wont run on my PPC
machines. :)

Re: New iMac

2011-08-21 Thread James Carroll

I DO maintain a PPC Mac Mini (1.25 GHz) and a PPC Quick Silver 2002 (dual
1.0 GHz) for compatibility purposes, only.

But, for perhaps the last FIVE years, ALL my Macs (really, Macks/Hacks)
have been Intel generic machines onto which I have installed MacOS 10.5,
 10.6 or, yes, 10.7.

Indeed, I even experimented with the FIRST Intel Mac, an Intel 915GAG,
running 10.4.8. Worked pretty well, too.

I still use my powerbook G4 1.67 a good bit for various apps that are
better than what I have on my linux boxes. I did install snow leopard on
a core2duo dell I have but after using it for a few weeks I went back to
Ubuntu. The hackintosh worked well but I find that after 12 years of
using linux it has gotten to the point where I like it better now for
general use. I imagine when it gets to the point that 10.5 is no longer
supported that will be the end for me.
