what is this card....
Howdey Group I have just acquired a G5 Powermac 2.5 GHz (june 2004). I booted her up and was intrigued to see if it had either the airport extreme or bluetooth optional extra, system profiler reckoned not. On inspection of the inside, I have found a rather small card, screwed onto the MB which looks suspiciously like a wifi or blue tooth card. It has two black wires, one looks like a typical wifi antenna you find in a laptop 9with connector), the other is more substantial and looks like a bluetooth antenna, with a connecter that has a 90 degree bend in it. Neither is connected to anything and wrapped away neatly. Here are photos of the thing http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n57/jaydentaku/photo2-1.jpg http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n57/jaydentaku/photo1.jpg I have searched the number on the card, but it returned no results. Re: OT: Inverter Board Question
I don't know what it is that you are referring to, laptop/monitor etc) So this is general advice: The inverter powers the backlight and so would only be responsible for issues relating to that. Are the lines identical and vertical? Are they coloured red, blue, or white? If so, then it is likely to be a faulty ribbon that connects the LCD panel. If it's horizontal lines appearing on the laptop screen the fault may be a poor connection between video cable and LCD screen, a faulty video cable or LCD screen failure. Try connecting it to an external display, if the problem persists, then it is almost certainly your graphics chip. . -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: CPU upgrade options for Power Mac G4 DA
It is my understanding that as long as the Powermac shares the same Front Side Bus, in this case, a 133 MHz, then yes, a CPU from a later model will be compatible. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: G5 Logicboard
A search on ebay (uk) shows two new g5 boards, one for a 17 imac and one for a pro, both £400. Capacitor repair kits are available for £13. It's a matter of soldering on 31 capacitors. Give the cost of parts, the time and faff on, Andy TheMac's offer of £60 is reasonable. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: G5 Logicboard
Not necessarily. But the likelihood of them popping on any used motherboard is greater with age and more so in the case of the G5's. I would never repair a pc motherboard, just throw it away, it's not cost effective. But with the prices for the G5's being so high, I recommend you get your existing one reconditioned. Burst capacitors is one of the most common reasons for ageing motherboard failure. If it is the reason for the failure of your motherboard, replacing them will be not only cheaper than a used replacement, but will certainly increase the chances of it lasting longer than a used one. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Hi Jean I really do feel your pain Re: the G4 books list, I have the very same problem. I am quite surprised you have been allowed to discuss your PB here. Having been told where to go previously. You don't really need to go any further than this article http://lowendmac.com/ed/campbell/08ic/best-version-of-mac-os-x.html I am running 10.5 on my 1.5GHz PBG4 and with 1.5GB of ram. I use Tenfourfox for browsing and all fine and nippy. regards selling, if you go to ebay and select 'completed listings on the left of the page', this will show you the PB's that sold, for how much and of course, you can view their spec's. This, I think is the decent way to gauge current values. I think there should be plenty of life left in it yet. Mine, bar a minor graphics issue, is running smoothly. Superdrive woe
Hi I have a 17 powerbook G4 1.5 with the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825 superdrive. I am not a frequent burner of dvd/cd's. But I am used to more modern drive which don't fuss over what type of media you use. According to it's specs, it reads dvd full stop and burns - and +. I have had it reading from cd's and dvd's, I have yet to burn from it though. But it will not recognise a particular dual layer dvd+ I have burned. It just spits it out. It also spits out a blank disc of the same kind. I have read elsewhere that apple recommend TDK. Have I read correctly, that these drives are fussy and only like certain brands of disc? Also, should I be ok to read and write to dvd+ dual layers and if so, which work for you best? Re: Superdrive woe
Thanks peeps. Just realised this is the g-group and not the lappy group. Doh. I haven't cleaned the drive Dan, no. It reads audio CD's flawlessly, so I am confident it's clean. I wouldn't care if they were cheap, but we only stock good quality media. They work just fine on the other drives in the workshop (6). Just thought, I burnt the same image at home on my mid 2010 imac and it failed to complete twice with toast ultimate. I have diagnoses the disc I did today on a pc and it threw back zero errors and it read fine with MacDrive 8. I shall try a different manufacturer. Trouble on two mac, might be a clue! I will try it on my Mac Pro and see what that throws up. cheers -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
