Does this mean bad RAM or problems with the logic board or processor?

From the sounds of it all of your RAM may be flaky or it's a bad
logic board, BUT, you have not tried:

1) Run Applejack http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ which also
includes a handy memory test module that works well. This will
tekll you pretty quickly if you have a flaky DIMM slot or bad ram.

2) Started in safe mode, eliminating most third-arty extensions and
drivers.

3) Logged in as a different user, to eliminate userspace issues
like corrupted caches and preferences.

Re: Crashes and keyboard freeze on MMD

2012-04-25 Thread tsaec...@att.net

This morning 12 hours later I cannot get this computer to boot.
I get the normal start up chime/bong then once it lights up the
monitor I have a black rectangle on a grey screen or just the apple
in the center of the grey screen.
Once with the 'C' key held down and the cd in it gave me the same
except the rectangle had the you need to restart your computer text
in it.

Tried booting into single user mode, it boots up to the exact same
hang screen and message as last night. This screen will not accept
any keyboard input.
Tried booting with the option key, I get the selection of start up
disks but it only goes to the blank you need to restart your
computer screen when I try to start it.
The only thing I have not tried is booting into OS 9 which I'm not
sure if this machine will do.

It seems stuck in Applejack and Single user mode.

Any tricks that I don't know about to make it boot to OSX?
Or is this a fatal error?

Could this hang cause any possible problems with the HDD?

OS X 10.4.11
I didn't know Safari was up that far since Software update only took
me to 4.1.3.

What version of OS X?
Safari is up to 5.0.6 (for non-Intel Macs)
Maybe run Onyx to clean things up

Quicksilver optic drive

2011-12-22 Thread tsaec...@att.net

The optical drive door hinges open at the bottom of the door.
It is quite easy to open the door with a finger nail or carefully
with a sharp object.
Once the door is open you will see the front of the drive its self
with it's paper clip hole.

From there I think you will know what to do.

Lost Ethernet port

2011-07-16 Thread tsaec...@att.net
I have a strange occurrence that I wonder if any one can shed some
light on.

I have been struggling to get my new (1 Month) Linksys E2000 router
to play nice with my old Speedstream 5100B modem.
In the process of trying different changes, configurations etc. with
limited understanding. My ethernet port on my QS 2002 Dual 1GHz
simply quit working.
I was having to switch the cable back and forth from modem to router
to be able to access the different configurations.
At first the modem would go online connected direct to the computer
but after several hours I realized that it was not working.
No internet, no access to configuration in either box and no port
connection light on the router.

Different cable, same story.

In frustration I took a break and decided to try from the boys computer.
It connected to the respective boxes individually OK.

About that time I loaded the router install DVD and read enough in
the instruction manual to reset the router to factory defaults.
Hooking modem and router back together and running the install
program got both back working together again.
About then I phoned ATT DSL Tech support and spent another fruitless
45 minutes changing configurations around some more but this time I
was careful to shut down the boxes or sleep the computers before un
and re plugging the ethernet cable.

After that waste of time I reset to defaults again and reran the
setup wizard, copied to a flash drive and reset up all my other
computers.
Last figuring that there was probably no chance I ran the set up on
my QS and Lo and Behold the ethernet port is working again.

Have had a week of trouble free operation so far.

Has anyone any ideas about what happened to cause this port to quit
like this and then come back?

Flashing a PC video card if you do NOT have a PC

2010-05-26 Thread tsaec...@att.net
I understand the confusion of deadwinters post helo? Anyone?
under the subject Flashing PCI cards if you do NOT have a PC.
I too have been somewhat confused by the answers to the question. I
don't know about deadwinter but my problem is likely due to my age
(really old). And a lack of some the foundational experience that all
you experts have.

So I'll change the subject line to be more accurate to my
question.
Which is can you flash a PC video card for use on a MAC if you don't
have access to a PC?

I think we first need a clear Yes or No to;

PCI Video cards
and a clear Yes or No to
AGP Video cards.

If any are yes then please point us to the appropriate web sites etc.

Thanks

Re: Newly installed 9200 video card won't wake up UPDATE

2009-12-07 Thread tsaec...@att.net
After going through all the resets with no changes I decided to pull
the card again and noticed a difference in one of the gold foil
contacts on the board.
It was kind of crumpled up as if it peeled off the board during
insertion.

My question now is : Is there a way to repair such a tiny contact?

Thanks All,

Tom
