Use MS Word, 
hold Option key down then click on File you will now see the words OPEN ANY 
FILE, select it and you can see what is in this part of the file.

You can try using 7zip. It normally can read any type of archive. If it does
have some type of archive inside of it, the program can at least tell you if
it's complete or not.

and what is an .a07 file anyway?

a quick google indicates it's some sort of archive file for Windows or
something?

I don't think so, without the rest of the files.  It seems that it would go
.a01, .a02 and so forth. It looks like that is part of an archive and is
missing the rest
