Another minor tale of woe and ass-u-me ...
Heh! After thinking about this for awhile, I started wondering what values my ol' G4 400 Gigabit was seein' on the 160GB Seagate drive that I installed a couple of years ago. The reason, the limitations for HDs with this era machine. Yep, I partitioned it into three equal volumes and got the following from Get Info. #1 - 49.55GB #2 - 49.55GB #3 - 49.55GB Then I remember vaguely someone mentioning that partitioning is the workaround to achieve the full potential of this drive so I guess that a total value of just under 150GB proves that out with the rest of the missing capacity just being consumed by overhead. Interesting point: System Profiler lists this drive as having a total capacity of 128GB which would be its unpartitioned capacity. Oh well, just something to break up the morning... Until your last comment about USB2, I believed that iChat will only work with Firewire camera's. You learn everyday, if you're willing and ready to. Thanks a lot Bruce. The cameras in the iMacs and Macbook/macbook pros are USB cameras. There;'s a specific class of USB cameras that works natively with iChat. They finally developed the USB Video Class (UVC), a standard protocol for accessing video devices (cameras, composite video adapters, etc). I don't know what took them so long. Some version of Tiger introduced support for UVC cameras. A later version added support for them in iChat. So if you are using 10.4.11 or Leopard then UVC is supported. So any UVC camera can be used with 10.4.11. The problem is that a lot of UVC cameras do not say they are UVC capable on the packaging or in some cases in the manufacturers online docs. But most or all will say they are Vista compliant which is the same thing. Well this is good to know. Now I turn my attention to a video web server...where people can log in and see a live stream. I'm not seeing any cable. The gooseneck thingie ends in a USB plug, so you can plug it in directly, there's also a weighted base that comes with a USB cable, and a usb port on the top for the camera. Here's a good picture: http://tinyurl.com/aecrjw The camera is plugged into the base here. (the usb cable, which is about 2.5-3' long is the dark blob in the box there.) They exaggerate greatly, no way are these cameras truly 1.3 megapixels. I was playing with mine and at that resolution (1280x1024) there were horrible, horrible jaggies in the image. But the focus was sharp at 640x480and 800x600, and their 5cm to infinity focus range seems right, which will make them great for playing with stop-action animation. You'll need iChatUSBCam to use them with iChat. It had quite good low-lighting response, and a decent framerate. It was worth the $14 + SH I paid at Woot. You can get 'em at K-mart for $19, about the same price I got after SH. Thanks for the review Bruce...here is a camera I will pass on. Well, upon further experimentation, the jaggies were the result of two things: the low light conditions, and some peculiarities with their snapshot function. Here is a test image taken under better conditions. http://dbdev2.pharmacy.arizona.edu/miscjunk/hue.html (Student group had a bake sale this morning...) Bottom line, it looks as though the claimed resolution of 1280 x 1024 (1.3 megapixels) is based on an interlaced video signal. The snapshot takes one frame. The true resolution of the CCD is very likely 640x512, so when it's blown up to full claimed resolution it looks like crap. Their included video monitor properly interlaces both frames and displays it as a single image on the screen, so the OS screen cap looks better. Not exactly false advertising, but quite close, imo. It could also just be the Mac driver, as well. I haven't installed it under Windows to see what it looks like there. In the world of computers, most of us are so used to things being genuinely difficult that we're unprepared for when the solution is easy and obvious. Is it plugged in? Does the manual tell you how to do it? Does it just start working when you connect everything up? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
