Re: Interesting Problem

2011-06-26 Thread Sean Carroll
Sorry, Chuck - I misread the part about the Safari update difficulty,
which sent me off into outer space with a lot of irrelevant speculation.

3. Have you ever run the program Monolingual in Leopard, or indeed,
in a previous OS X that Leopard was installed over?

That would be a yes.

This may or may not bear on the interesting problem, but I have heard
that use of Monolingual can have unpredictable consequences on
subsequent updates. I ran Monolingual on Tiger 10.4.11 and haven't
noticed any trouble since, but I was fortunate to run across an
article on prudent and cautious use of Monolingual before I tried it.
I haven't run Monolingual on Leopard 10.5.8 (which I didn't install
over Tiger but on a fresh partition), but then again, the old Tiger
Home folder did migrate to Leopard. Still, though, no obvious problems
have been noted as a result.

I'm glad Bruce chimed in on the client question. I wanted to say 'go
ahead, don't worry about it,' but looking at the Apple download page,
I got confused myself. They make it confusing. Everything is somehow
recommended for all users. Gee, that helps.

Very frustrating, waiting on the slow progress of updates. But is your
dial-up connection really *that* slow ordinarily? I had great,
reliable dial-up service with Earthlink for years. I think it was
about as good as a dial-up connection can be. Even so, dial-up is dial-
up, and any big updates or other large downloads were projects rather
than routine tasks. I remember it well, and with no nostalgia.

I would recommend trying again through Software Update, piece by
piece this time.

I did start down that road, and decided to just move on to downloading
the individual 'update' packages --- and then on to using 'Download
Manager'

I mean, I *would,* but for the following questions

1. What's your previous history with Software Update in Leopard? Has
it run before without incident? Was that a long time ago or recently?

Haven't had unusual problems [Usual 'slow connection' problems, common.]

2. What's the Leopard installation/update history on your machine?

That gets interesting --- I have the Leopard 10.5.8 installed on a
'Firewire' HD, and use the SAME system/installation with:
Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5, Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 (MDD), iBook G4. No
problems once the connection criteria are set.
Update history --- everything available till this offering --- [Except
for NOT updating unused features, I.E. iTunes, etc.]

3. Have you ever run the program Monolingual in Leopard, or indeed,
in a previous OS X that Leopard was installed over?

That would be a yes.

4. If you go to Apple MenuAbout This Mac, is the information
(including build and serial number) correct?

Haven't ever had reason to question this.

5. What is your current version of Safari?

5.0.2

6. If you go to System PreferencesSoftware UpdateInstalled
Updates, do you see anything that indicates that the updates that
failed were already installed earlier? (Wondering if there's
something going on with Software Update itself.)

Nope, was more interested in ID information so I could locate the
correct items in Apple's archives.

7. Any other problems with downloads or installations recently?

No

This is just stuff I'd be asking myself if it was my interesting
problem. I'm not to be confused with an expert.

Odd it would download from software up dates if it couldn't run. The
one that usually gives the alert is iTunes on Tiger. Try to download
again but with dial up it takes a long time if it comes at all. That
package of software is 10 or more hours on dial up in this town:-)

Thumb Drives --- interesting problem

2009-02-05 Thread Charles Davis

I have several 2GB SanDisk units.
One of which I an using to keep archival copies of 'Software Update'
items.

2GB --- lots of space, everything going well.
Quite useful to have copies of 'install packages' and 'updates'. Very
handy to NOT have to download the same LARGE update just because I
have several MDDs.

The other day, after another 'Update' cycle, I was attempting to add
the most recent file to the SanDisk.

Error message --- not enough space.
So, I looked over the SanDisk directory [Units have been 'cleaned' of
the U3 garbage, and formatted for MAC], deleted older Combo, and non-
Combo update packages to free up some space.

Didn't work Available space amount doesn't reflect unused space.
It SEEMS to indicate 'unused (yet) space. Space once used does NOT
return to an 'available' list.

Very annoying.

I can, transfer everything to a HD temporarily, re-format the
SanDisk, transfer things back to the SanDisk, which should leave
unused space in a 'still usable' condition.

Because of the 'finite' life (write cycles) of the Thumb Drives, I'm
hesitant to apply this solution.

Any bright ideas??

I wouldn't worry about write cycles doing something like that, it's a
