Rule of the thumb: any USB 2.0 card with a non-VIA chipset will work fine.
The one I've got here in my Beige G3 has a NEC chipset.

Re: USB 2.0 Card for MDD G4

An option that no one has yet mentioned but one of those you get what you
pay for products.

7-Port NitroAV FireWire 800/1394b USB2.0/1/1 ComboProfessional PCI Host
Adapter Interface supporting 32-Bit 64-Bit Bus Systems
(Mac/WIN)http://www.firewiredirect.com/product/57/

I have been using the above product, which when I researched and bought it
three (or more) years ago was unique and it looks as if it still is - I've
hung various external hard drives upto 2TB raid array off it and used it for
elgato EyeTV (which has been a productivity killer :-) With some drives it
has presented sleep issues to the system but I don't believe that was the
card’s fault. Pricey compared with single function cards but in my Sonnet
Duet 1.8Ghz upgraded Quicksilver has been a very good extension.

You can't go wrong with Sonnet.
My G4s have an Adaptec card, only 2 ports, but that's all I really
need at high speed. They were just $10 if I remember correctly.

Re: USB 2.0 Card for MDD G4

2011-10-27 Thread Michael McMurtrey
Thanks to those who replied to my request for advice as to which card
to purchase. I've ordered the cheaper no-name card from Operator
HeadGap and will have a full report on it once it is received and
installed. I was tempted to go with the Sonnet Allegro, as I have a
Sonnet G4 processor upgrade in my Beige G3 and it has given me no
trouble, and the price difference was negligible. But we'll see how
this one works.
