emac in coma

2014-03-19 Thread Don Wakefield
My trusty eMac suddenly will not come to life. It was working fine when I
powered it down to move it to another desk. It sat disconnect for almost 3 days
and when it came time to power it up in the new location - nothing! No bong,
no fan noise, no drive spin noise.  I have tested the end of the plug which
goes into the body with a VOM and it does indeed have 117v. I have taken the
bottom off, checked that the ram is seated, and pushed the PMU button to no
avail. Any other ideas as to how to wake this guy up before I invest $$ at my
friendly repair shop?

I hate to say it, but this sounds suspiciously like the power supply. Some
marginal caps may wake up if you leave them plugged in for a couple days.

Unfortunately, the eMac power supply is (IIRC) integrated with the display
and analogue assembly, so unless you are able to do a component level
repair, you may be looking at finding a new machine.

One other suggestion: I dug out my service manual stack and the eMac
manual suggests verifying the PMU battery and resetting it. You stated
you reset it, but didn't mention the battery.

None of their other suggestions recommend anything other than replacement,
unfortunately.

My experience with eMacs that suddenly stop working after being unplugged for a
while is to check the logic board and the down converter plugged into it for
bad capacitors. Up to 7 of the 11-12 caps on the down converter daughter board
can show bulging and/or leaking. Since the down converter powers everything
connected to the logic board, a bad one can have the same effect on startup as
a bad power supply in the analog/video assembly.

The fix is to replace the down converter with a known-good used or new one --
if one can be found, or replace the bad caps, which will entail more than a
little effort to identify and then procure the replacements.

Been there, fixed 'em.

A dead PRAM battery could be your issue. If the PRAM battery hasn't been
replaced ever, it's almost certainly dead, and needs replacement.

If the PRAM battery is good, the power button is the next thing, these do break
often, and a Google search for eMac power button will get you some
replacement ideas if yours is broken. Here's a good link to power button
replacement, and there's a link to a full eMac service manual on this page:
