At present, I think using an Ethernet cord is the only way. But I am
  hoping that I am wrong.

 There are three ways:

 1) if you have the Slot-loading Imac G3, as mentioned previously, you can
obtain an 802.11b Airport card and an adapter board for it... they are
 regularily on Ebay.

 2) if you have the tray-load Imac G3, it cannot accept the Airport card,
but it can use a 802-11g USB wirelsss adapter.   My daughters each have one
with their iMacs; one is a Belkin and the other is a AirExtreme.   There are
 several makes I believe...

 3) if you happen to either have already, or can get one easier, a wireless
ethernet bridge also has to be included.   It's a stand-alone device that
connects to the iMac via the ethernet port, and allows it to send/receive
 wirelessly.

The Ruby G3 iMac is a slot loading, 400 mHz, built in the summer of
2000.

What is a wireless ethernet bridge?

A wireless box that connects to your wired ethernet port, and ends
with a wirelss connection. They're sometimes called Gaming adapters,
because they'll connect anything with an ethernet port to a wireless
system.

It's a stand-alone device (not running off computer like a USB dongle) that
receives the wireless signal and then has an ethernet cable running from it
to the computer needing wireless, to provide it with a wireless connection.

See:
http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-802-11g-wireless-ethernet-bridge-54-mbps/q/lo

That is an example of one that I have used; there are several makes, and
any computer store should have a few. There are also plenty of used ones.

I forgot -- they IS another method of connecting a computer to an ethernet
signal w/o using a long cable, and that is a POE adapter-setup:

Hello Jane

Yes, depending on your imac - next to the memory slots is another slot
for a carrier and airport card, but you will get a slow connection
compared to ethernet, and ethernet is much more reliable.

It depends on which G3 iMac you're talking about. Slot-loading iMacs (with the
exception of some 350 MHz units I've seen) are capable of using the original
802.11b Airport card, with a special adapter. Tray-loading G3 iMacs were devoid
of an Airport slot, but I believe can go wireless using a USB adapter. Google
G3 iMac USB wi-fi or search the Low End Mac web site. You should get plenty
of hits as I've seen this subject come up many times over the years.

Look on the back of the iMac. If it has a door with a coin latch,
open it. Look inside for a slot

Early 350 and 400 MHz G3 slot-loading iMacs had some odd features. For example,
they did not come with an Apple Hardware Test disk, and will not run an Apple
Hardware Test that runs on later 400 MHz iMacs. Also, I seem to remember
reading that some education iMacs didn't have Airport slots as a factory
option, but I can't find the documentation. That may explain your
non-Airport-capable 400 MHz iMac.
