Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: 2.0.0 beta 5 >Status: Closed >Resolution: Duplicate Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Aurora Skarra-Gallagher (aurorasg) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Blinking status icon on unread message behavior confusing Initial Comment: The old behavior of the plugin was that if someone sends you an IM, the taskbar icon only flashes if you don't already have an IM window open with that person. The new behavior is that it flashes whenever you have an IM from anyone, even if you have an open window (that is minimized or shaded) with that contact. I really don't like that, and would like an option to only make the taskbar icon blink when I get a new message from someone I DON'T have a window open with. I rely on other notification methods (like having an asterisk in the title bar of the IM window from the Message Notification plugin) to show me that I've received an IM from someone with whom I'm already chatting. I'm using GAIM 2.0.0beta5 on RHEL4 in GNOME. I have these plugins enabled: * Buddy State Notification * History * Message Notification * Release Notification ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Casey Harkins (charkins) Date: 2006-12-07 09:31 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=254876 Originator: NO I'll try to get a patch up to restore the prefs for selecting blinking behavior, not sure if it'll get accepted or not. Lets move any conversation on this over to this feature request (so this bug can be closed out): https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1596628&group_id=235&atid=350235 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: bbbl (bbbl) Date: 2006-12-06 21:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1662654 Originator: NO Please allow an option to get back the original behavior, the new behavior is not effective at all. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Aurora Skarra-Gallagher (aurorasg) Date: 2006-12-02 18:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=940630 Originator: YES I would be fine having what I've requested not be the default behavior, but having an option for it in Preference | Interface | System Tray Icon. For instance, something like "Only notify on messages from buddies you're not currently chatting with". Would that be acceptable? It seems reasonable to have this as an option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Casey Harkins (charkins) Date: 2006-12-01 10:13 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=254876 Originator: NO What you are describing was the 1.5 behavior of the docklet. There were feature requests for the current behavior, so I added the current behavior in as a preference. When the docklet moved from plugin to core, the prefs were cut and this behavior was chosen. So the question is whether to change the behavior back to blink only for unread messages on hidden conversations, to add the pref back in, or to keep the current behavior. I'm happy to submit the patch to do either of these, but would rather here from a core dev or two as to whether they want to include such a patch. There was a discussion on gaim-devel when these prefs were slashed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Aurora Skarra-Gallagher (aurorasg) Date: 2006-11-30 12:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=940630 Originator: YES To clarify on why it's nice to have this feature, I use the system tray icon to let me know if I'm getting a message from a contact that I'm not chatting with. I find it distracting to see it blinking when it's simply indicating that there is a conversation going on in a chat window that I already have open, because I use the Message Notification plugin settings to tell me that I'm getting a message from someone I'm already chatting with. I consider it a separate thing to be notified when a new person is IM'ing me. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Aurora Skarra-Gallagher (aurorasg) Date: 2006-11-30 12:21 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=940630 Originator: YES The option when right-clicking is to flash on a new message. There is no specific option to only flash when a new message comes from a buddy who you are not chatting with already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2006-11-29 23:46 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 Originator: NO right click on the icon to see the options available for the flashing. do these solve this issue? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100235&aid=1604716&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
