However, in Gaim, away buddies are displayed in *black* (which, on a normal theme, looks exactly the same as available buddies) which I cannot read and which makes my buddy list look terrible. This functionality changes nothing for users with a black-on-white theme. I am also absolutely sure that this is not a problem with my theme, as I have tried other non-black-on-white themes that don't have black anywhere in them and they also display away buddies in black.
