Summary: Ability to delete message from the new mail notification

Initial Comment:
I get a new mail notification dialog when I get a new
mail. I wish I could delete the mail, if I think I
don't want to read it. (I could base the decision on
the subject of the mail.)

The feature would be good for other messengers, too.

Just to add that personally I don't really have any use for
the toolbars I mentioned. It's just that I don't see the
point of adding a button just for the /buzz command. I
suppose from a personal point of view, I would like to be
able to hide the toolbars.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was
wondering... Why not expand this idea and have a macro
toolbar? You could have a general toolbar that would apply
to all protocols and separate toolbars for other protocols.

The type of toolbar I was thinking of is like that used in
the gvim text editor. The toolbar would basically be set up
and configured using plug-in like scripts. gvim menu
scripts contains commands that could be described as
AddButton or something like that.

I don't know whether this should be just restricted to macro
functionality or not. It could be argued if there is a
toolbar for macros, why not go the whole way and have a
toolbar for logging out, setting up accounts, file
transfers, etc... That is basically a full featured toolbar
that you would see in a modern gui word processor.

At the moment I prefer the idea of just making the toolbar
only for macros. Allowing the toolbar to do other things
feels at the moment like opening a can of worms. Users
would then have more justification in asking, Can we have a
toolbar button for X, Y and Z functions in gaim?

As I have 61 contacts from my workplace in gaim I would like the functionality
to block (and unblock) all 61 contacts at once. I have them in one group and
would like to see perhaps a right click menu on this group to block them.

Is this possible with multiple accounts?

Initial Comment:
If gaim is already running, and the user accidentally
launches a second copy of gaim, it would be nice to
bring the currently running copy of gaim to the
foreground, instead of launching a second copy of gaim.
Launching a second copy of gaim causes issues with
protocols like yahoo messenger, where only one
concurrent login is permitted. After launching the
second copy of gaim, the user is now left with two
copies of gaim, unsure of which copy is still logged
into yahoo messenger. Yes this is a minor issue, and
its the user should be smart enough to not launch a
second copy of gaim...but hey, most gaim users are
human ;-)

Hello I have been using GAIM 1.5 for a long while and
I am testing out 2.0 beta 2 and I noticed that when I
am chatting since I installed 2.0 beta 2 that when
someone sends me a message it doesn't flash in the
taskbar like it did. I don't have speakers and don't
always have my headphones on so I don't hear the
sounds, but I use to rely on the flashing in the
taskbar. Can you put that feature back. Also I have
continuely had troubles connecting to yahoo. I have
the yahoo messenger installed and it gets through no
problems but I have to turn on the feature that it has
for Firewall no proxy I don't know exactly what it
does when I turn that feature on, but it allows me to
connect to yahoo no problems, I can't find that
feature in GAIM 1.5 or 2.0. Can you add that feature.

In response to your first probelm, you need to enable the
window flashing in the plug-in called wingaim options.

The second one seems like a feature request, but I'm not a
dev so... someone correct me if I am wrong.

Summary: Ability to use external prog to play sounds in Win32 build

Initial Comment:
I personally would love to be able to use an external program to play the event
sounds in the Win32 build.

The reason for this, I'd like to know if someone messaged me while playing
music. I use DirectSound for my media player. DirectSound supports multiple
streams, WaveOut, which the Win32 build of Gaim uses, does not.

I do have a small Win32 program that can play wavs through DirectSound. I even
use it for X-Chat.

It's just that alot of Win32 IM clients don't really take this into account for
event sounds. Just would be nice if Gaim did support this.

2.
bad default(current):

also you would want to make sure that the /\ doesn't

Please, add a Install new theme button into dialogs

If someone adds you to his/her contact list and you receieve a x has made y
his or her own buddy message, it's quite frustrating there's no way to made X
_your_ buddy AFAIK.

You can't even copy the damn number into clipboard. :) IIRC it's not even in
the system log, so once you close the tiny message, you're basically screwed.

It would be really nice to have a Made your buddy as well button there. Or,
at least, to be able to copy the number to clipboard...

Summary: Ability to Remove Buddy List from Taskbar

Initial Comment:
This should be really easy to implement:

I've switched between Gaim and Trillian over and over again over the past
couple of months. I've just switched back to Gaim, but one of the features I
really miss from Trillian was the ability to not have the Buddy List be visible
on the Windows taskbar while it's open (I realize you can already minimize it
to the system tray.)

If this feature were to be implemented (hiding the Buddy List from the
taskbar,) perhaps clicking the system tray icon would focus the Buddy List?

Does anyone else think this is a good idea?

It probably doesn't show up because the dll was compiled with a different
version of gaim. What is the debug output when you load gaim and it tries
to load the extprefs.dll?

Compiling extprefs.dll within cygwin is being worked on and there are some
issues compiling it.
When a version is released there will be a post on the gaim forum to
download the dll from the extprefs site. Hopefully this will be in the next
week or so.

I'm running 2.0 beta 6 on Windows, and if I copy extprefs.dll into my Gaim
plugins directory, the plugin does not show up in the list.

This behavior can be toggled with the Extended Preferences plugin.
There's an option to hide the Buddy List from the taskbar.
Just download the plugin from http://gaim-extprefs.sourceforge.net/ ,
install and be happy ;)

Summary: Account/status buttons are huge.

Initial Comment:
On a 12 laptop, the new integrated buttons for the
accounts and away status are HUGE. I would like it if
there were multiple sizes or if you could un-dock them
from the buddy list. Ideally I'd like to keep the away
message management separate as in previous versions of
Gaim, and maybe use the account buttons the way that
they are integrated into this new version, though I'd
prefer them to be the height of the menu items or small
buddy icons (about 16x16 or 24x24, something like
that). Other than that, the new version is looking
sweet. Great work.

Yes, I think chokuchou's idea seems the most reasonable,
along with the extra options in the menu. The only thing I
believe would be missing then is the button currently at the
bottom in gaim 2.0beta1, which applies to all screen names
currently signed on.

I agree. The new buttons are way too large.
Personally, I would like to see a solution that looks like this:

http://mike.1b1.nl/gaim-mockup.png

I think a three option setting in the Preferences should do
the job:
Display Account Buttons in Buddy List: None/Button
only/Buttons and Text

I solved this by simply dragging down the middle section of
the buddy list, so that this section with the separate
account status buttons for each screen name was hidden, and
i only saw the one button that affects all screen names. I
agree, however, that this function should also be in the
menus, not only on this section at the bottom of the buddy list.

Would be a nice feature.
Alternativly to the tabs, it might be realised as another
level of treeview in buddy list / multi level groups.

Example:
-account 1
--group 1 of account 1
---user 1 of group 1 of account 1
---user 2 of group 1 of account 1
---user n of group 1 of account 1
--group n of account 1
-account m
and so on

As a work-around (in 2.0.0 beta 1) I have solved it by
generating a group per account, but with this I am not able
to have (sub)groups per account (because there is only one
level for groups).

Initial Comment:
It would be nice if it would be possible to add new
contacts to a 'IM with one person, instead of opening
a new conversation as 'chat'. after all, an 'IM' is
just a 'chat' with only 2 people, and its a bit
inconsistent to treat it as something different.

also, its pretty annoying if the other person adds
someone, to have the entire conversation erased, just
because gaim wants to open a new conversation instead...

It's not quite true that an 'IM' is just a 'chat' with two
people. On at least aim and jabber they are entirely
separate things, so you can't just invite someone into your
IM conversation, but rather you need to create a chat and
all join it. There is a jabber proposal to handle
'converting' an IM into a chat, but I don't know if many
things support it yet. Further, currently gaim treats IMs
and chats differently and as such can't readily convert one
into the other. There has been talk of fixing the way gaim
handles this to make it possible but I don't think it's on
the table for anytime soon, what with all the other changes
going on.

Summary: Ability to send / import Buddy LIsts

Initial Comment:
We are looking at using Gaim in an office environment -
the key feature we'd like to see is the ability to import a
pre-defined list of buddies into a new user's profile. That
way, when a new hire comes in, we can just load up the
list and bring them up to speed, rather than add them
one at a time.

I as well would like to see this feature added. Gaim should
probably use a plaintext file format which can be edited in a
text editor as well.

Summary: Add left margin space to IM window

Initial Comment:
For the windows version of gaim (0.64), which is the
only version I have tried, there is no space between the
first character I type, and the left window border of the
IM window.

This makes the letter quot;Iquot; difficult to see.

Can this be changed?

I am using version 1.5 now. I have not compared 1.5 to
0.64, but I still think a little space before the first
character would be an improvement.

If this is not easy to do, just close this issue.

Thanks,

Frank

alxdotnet: that's true for an account where either 1)you use other clients
to connect from it 2)you connect to it from other computers or 3)you have
never connected to it from gaim

it is not true though if you use only gaim from a single computer and have
at some point connected to that account.

Still, with the betas, enabled accounts are those under gaim's control
so I think it makes sense that only these accounts would show up.

Nathan, is that what we are now doing, or are we only showing for those
both enabled and in some online state?

The problem with this is that AIM buddy lists are server-
based, so you'd have to log on to an account to show its
buddies, even the offline ones.

The IM window does not display the date, only the time,

would be better for logging/historical viewing as:

(2004/08/09 12:25:12) Gary: Thanks.

I desperately need this feature too. It would be best to
have an open and dynamic method of defining the date used
for chat sessions. I recommend the method Apache uses.

If you want this I can add in the source code and I can Give
you But this is not required it seems.

The Reasons are as follows

- When you char with the destination both will be in on
same date so there It is neccessary to display the time But
not the date But If you give some offline message At that
time Your destination is openig the message after 3 days at
that time It is neccasary to tell the date also that gaim
will do already.. there is no problem in that but if the
source and destincation online at that time gaim will
display the time If your message is older than 20 minutes
that time it will diplay the message whatever U asked for
I think U can check in the gaim itself

- Also it is not a Bug the developers done this concept
Speclfically

If you want some clarification regarding this Please let me know

Summary: AIM Direct IM File Send Status

Initial Comment:
Is it possible (when using Direct IM) to show the status of a file transfer
like AIM does? Not the regular file transfers themselves, but when you are
using the direct IM feature you never know when something is coming such as a
picture or sound.

Also, it would be cool to have sounds play in the background when a .wav is
sent, such as the regular AIM does. And you could even have an option to turn
this off so sound files don't play automatically when they are sent, but have
it on by default.

My friend and I use the Direct IM feature a lot with regular AIM to send sounds
and pictures, and the limited Direct IM features on GAIM are all that really
keep me from using it as my main client.

Sorry if this was already requested in the past, or is an upcoming feature, I
didn't see it. Thanks!

Ethan Blanton's key can be obtained from the pgp.mit.edu

  gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 883c1c14

Visiting http://pgp.mit.edu/ and searching for Stu
Tomlinson yields a report of several keys. Presumably, the
appropriate one(s) can also be obtained with the gpg command.

Thanks to Ethan for his assistance.

Initial Comment:
Currently, the Buddy State Notification plugin does not
notify when a user switches to AIM mobile or returns
from AIM mobile. My brother is always signed in on his
cellphone, so when he signs off of gaim from his
desktop, it seamlessly switches to showing him signed
in on his phone. The problem is that sometimes he signs
off without telling me, and I send a message thinking
he's still signed into gaim because there is no
away/logout notification. I often forget to check my
buddy list for the mobile icon when an existing chat
window is still open. This wouldn't really be that big
of a deal if he didn't have to pay to receive text
messages on his phone. Something like the following
would be very helpful:

(08:21:06 PM) Screenname is mobile.
(08:26:06 PM) Screenname is no longer mobile.

so, I'd be willing to put code in the IRC Helper plugin to

I do not want IRC to reconnect. It's NOT that I want to get
a choice of what autoconnects at startup. I really really
don't want IRC to reconnect.

The reason is analogous to why for e.g. yahoo and MSN,
people do not want the services to reconnect if they have
signed in from another location.

This is exactly what is happening to me with IRC -- I
connect via dircproxy service which keeps my IRC session
forever. I connect to the dircproxy session from different
locations/computers etc. But now, if I connect with GAIM,
then when I connect to the dircproxy from elsewhere, GAIM
goes and reconnects me, kicking me out from elsewhere. This
keeps happening until I can kill the GAIM session.

So it's not that you don't want auto-reconnect, it's that
you don't want it signed in at startup.

Here's what you should try:
1. Click the status selector, click New.
2. Name this All But IRC
3. Set the base status to Available
4. Click the expander, click the checkbox next to your IRC
account.
5. Choose Offline as the IRC account's status.
6. Click OK, click Save.
7. Tools - Preferences, click the Status/Idle tab
8. Uncheck Use status from last exit at startup
9. Choose All But IRC from the drop-down.

Now, when you start Gaim, it will use the All But IRC
status that you created. That status says, Set everything
to available, except this IRC account which should be Offline.

If you later want to sign the IRC account on, click the
status selector and choose Available.

The saved status framework and the Use...last...[status] at
startup vs. use a given saved status preference allow for
extreme flexibility in what happens, far beyond that old
auto-login checkbox.

Currently silc passwords must be stored in the
accounts.xml file in order not to get the following
error :
Could not load SILC key pair

GAIM should ask for the password when it's not stored
(like it does for other protocols)

Adding comment from #904164 (Andy Chapman - nycran):
I would love to be able to place my contacts into
groups, and then allow or block users by group, rather
than having to do this user by user. eg:

Set up Groups:

A) Work
Screen Name: Hector
Screen Name: Mark
Screen Name: Luke

B) Home
Screen Name: Libby
Screen Name: Darrell

Then, say to GAIM, allow only 'work' people to contact
me, or allow only 'home' people to contact me.

At the moment you have to block users one by one. I
have not seen thie feature on any Messenger so far.

Cheers and thanks,
Andy Chapman.

Adding comment from #674959 (Wing Suit - esuit):
would be nice to have blocking (msn) groups - for
example: if i'm at work, i choose group quot;Workquot; and
only
those see me online, back at home i select quot;Homequot;, and
collegues won't see my online presence. Blocking them
one-by-one is way too time consuming :)

Normally I'd go in favor of the older request, but the older
one in this case is from 2003..

Summary: Announce/MOTD buddies and multiple resources

Initial Comment:
According to the note at
http://jabberd.jabberstudio.org/2/docs/section06.html#6_5,
an administrative user may send messages to either
server/announce for MOTD message to all users, or to
server/announce/online for a message to all online
users. It is also possible for the jabber server to
have set up a number of help accounts which will
recieve all message sent to server/anything.

In the case of the MOTD and online announcement JIDs,
it is currently (v1.5.0) impossible to have both JIDs
as separate buddies in your contact list, since the
only difference between the two is the resource ID.

(This may also relate to
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=918050group_id=235atid=350235
)

I would suggest that gaim should allow multiple buddies
with different jabber resources (which could all appear
when you expand a buddy).

My buddy list has gotten long and I like the big icon

There is a lot of horizontal real estate however that
is not used on the same workspace as Gaim. It would be
nice to be able to use this by having either a buddy
list with more than one column, or multiple buddy list
windows where I can choose which buddies show in which
window.

the only way to force this across idle times and away states
is to use the contact priority plugin, distributed in gaim's
source, but not compiled by default. this plugin, if it
still compiles and loads, would let you set weights to
override the priority computation gaim is currently using
(which produces either online idle away idle-away or online
away idle idle-away, I forget which).

I'm not sure of what you are saying but is it possible you get this
because AIM and ICQ have the idle timer which when is at at least 1 minute
MSN goes up because it doesn't idle before 5 minutes (or for ever) and yes
it would be nice to be able to ignore idle properties to class buddy list
(or an option) but still keep away and such.

This is a request to allow multiple selection

This would be obviusly with the ability to manipulate

This would make group managing quite easier.

Pretty low.
NSIS doesn't create MSIs and I'm not really interested in rewriting the
installer.
There are various tools available that can wrap the executable installer
in a MSI package.
If there is a really compelling argument why this is inadequate, bring it
up.

Summary: AIM profiles and links with target=\_self\

Initial Comment:
I am using gaim 0.79 on Slackware Linux 9.1 with a
2.4.26 kernel.

On my Windows version of AIM, it is possible to click
on a link that has been designated target=_self (e.g.
a href=www.google.com target=_selfGoogle/a),
and the page will open within the view profile
window. In gaim, clicking on these links always results
in a new browser window opening rather than the page
being loaded within the profile window. Is this a
security measure or a bug?

i isn't a real html tag for instance, and many real
html tags, such as the form tags, aren't supported in aim's
html parser. thus the distinction.

I wasn't aware of an AIM version of HTML, but isn't the
target=_self real HTML? I could have sworn I'd seen it
before somewhere other than in AIM. Either way (whether it's
official or not), there are still many people that use the
various subprofile services and it seems gaim should
consider supporting them (unless there is a security issue,
of course).

WinAim 4.x (never used 5.x) dies on real HTML, too. The subprofile sites
that use target=_self all use AIM's version of HTML, same as IMs or
regular profiles.

Ok, I was just thinking about the many Buddy Profile
services out there that use a target=_self link to create
an extended profile for AIM protocol users. Unless there is a
security issue, it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to have
these links load within the view profile window (with all
scripting and images disabled).

i would say niether. we don't have a full html parser in
gaim, just enough of one to do what the protocols actually
use. gaim isn't designed for browsing the web, and so i
would say this is the correct behavior.

Summary: Allow local user-defined buddy photo

Initial Comment:
Allow the local user to set the locally-displayed buddy
photo/icon for a buddy.

The 'alias' feature allows the local user to locally
override/set the server-supplied *buddy name* (which is
a good idea since people cram all sorts of junk into
their name).

Similarly, people cram all kinds of images into their
buddy photo (visible in IM windows at the lower left,
in the tooltips in the buddy list, and next to the
buddy name in a large-format buddy list). If the buddy
is putting up random junk, the local user should be
able to override it locally with their buddy's mugshot.

Sadrul, I'd love to see such a patch. Also, the current
drag-and-drop functionality would need to be updated to work
with your new code. I'd recommend storing a separate buddy
icon preference on the buddy, so that when the remote buddy
icon changes, you don't lose the local override.

I am currently working on a patch that adds 'Set Custom
Buddy Icon...' and 'Remove Custom Icon' (when approp.) to
the context menu of the buddyicon in the conversation
window. I am currently doing it from gtkui-only, ie. without
doing anything from the core. But it looks more likely that
the core is going to need to be aware of custom buddyicons.

You can currently do this by dragging an image into a
conversation window for that buddy. I think it'll be
overridden if the buddy changes their icon, making it mostly
useless. I could be wrong though. I'm going to look into this.

It appears as though it is simply stored client-side, and
that is what I had assumed until I logged into AIM at a
friend's house and accidently choose the menu option for
storing the buddy phone numbers and noticed that the phone
numbers I had stored for that buddy on my home computer all
showed up, even though I had never previously so much as
logged into my screen name from her computer. Which means
that it must be server-side.

The phone numbers aren't actually stored on the server--this is a client-
side feature. Adding cell phone numbers for the sending SMS messages
is currently broken in Gaim, and there is probably already a bug report
open for that.

Being able to select multiple dictionaries wont help you since you can
only use one of them at a time - there is no way to use a language per

on some protocols, particularily AIM, invisible only
affect whether you are seen on buddy lists or not.

it is, with the regular client, possible to have file
transfers and direct IMs with invisible buddies.

However, gaim does not allow this.

This should be changed so that file transfers and
direct IMs with invisible buddies work.

Summary: Allow choice of how to handle mobile contacts

Initial Comment:
Right now, Gaim seems to treat mobile contacts
(identified with a cellphone icon) as regular, online
buddies. I think it makes much more sense to
prioritize these users below regular contacts, even if
they are marked away. The order would then be:

1. Regular online contacts
2. Regular away contacts
3. Mobile contacts
4. Mobile away contacts (if they exist?)

This would impact sorting the buddy list by status and
also (most importantly) choosing which protocol appears
as the default for a contact.

The issue which brought this up is one of my contacts
has his AIM mobile account signed in, but also real
jabber and MSN accounts which are often marked away.
No matter what I do, the contact defaults to showing
his AIM mobile account which I don't want to use.

I'd love to see this fixed or an option to chose the
desired behavior at some point in the future.

I completely agree. Because I can never tell if someone
switches to mobile or off mobile, unless I look at the icon

It would be great if that was added into the buddy state

another related issue: the buddy state notification plugin
NEEDS to be able to say something when someone logs out and
(implicitly) switches to mobile, and the aim info window
needs to show mobile status. currently guifications will
show an away of offline event, but otherwise the rest of
gaim, except the icon in the buddy list, tells you the
person is still online.

You can do this with a Guifications plugin. Get their plugin pack and the
plug in question is called showoffline.dll in the zip.
http://gaim.guifications.org/trac/downloads

I have found that on jabber it sometimes does not show unless you have
show empty groups on. But it works fine for other IM protocols, at least
so far in my testing.

Summary: aol chat menu and offline folder

Initial Comment:
first i will start with i like the program and having all my
accounts in one window.I give it 41/2 stars. Now on to
the important stuff. in the buddy list it would be great to
have an offline folder like aol has. Second the chat. you
can not log onto the aol chat rooms with Gaim. if you
where in aol you would go to My AIM Control Panel
Chat. and then a menu opens listing some of the chat
rooms. and once you are in the chat room you can more
to another throught the menu at the bottom of the chat
window. and it lists all the chat rooms in this menu. it
would be great to be able to get to these chat rooms.
Another thing if you want to creat a new screen name
you still have to have aol or msn ( dont know about the
others) on you comp it would be great to be able to cut
out aol and msn and all the others and just use Gaim.
but my biggest complaint is that it is just missing some
of the features that i cant do without. so until then i will
be using both Gaim and the others that it is supose to
replace

we have never implemented reading buddy alerts off the
server (if they are stored there, i'm unsure), partly
because they are an annoyingly poor copy of the buddy pounce
functionality that we introduced into gaim well before aim
introduced buddy alerts. buddy pounces fully provide the
functionality of alerts, as well as much more.

now that i have looked through it more you are right there are
very few things missing. but one thing that is missing is buddy
alerts (or some kind of pop up to tell you who as just logged
on ) I am alot happyer with the program now that i have used
it some more. now i just have to get the rest of my family to
use it. I do have a question some times it takes it almost 3 or
4 min to log on to an account. could this be due to my
internet connection or firewall.

1)offline folder: i've never liked that ui.
2)chats: i cannot duplicate the inability to join a chat.
3)you can register for both aim and msn from webpages. see
the faq.
4)what features are we missing?

Summary: AIM: Insert Image button initiate Direct Connection

Initial Comment:
It would be nice if the INSERT IMAGE button, which is
in every AIM IM window, would initiate a Direct
Connection if one has not been established.

Currently, one has to right click the user's name in the
buddy list and click the option to open a Direct
Connection. If a Direct Connection is not already made,
and one uses the INSERT IMAGE button to locate a
picture they desire to send it will sert into the chat area
no problem, but once sent it will say that it requires a
Direct Connection to be established first.
It would be nice if the initial click of the Image button
would establish the connection, OR, the sending of the
first image would try to initiate the Direct Connection.
(Id prefer the first option, though).
