Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Pater (pater) Assigned to: Tim Ringenbach (marv_sf) Summary: No link to downloaded files in the conversation Initial Comment: I have previoudly used MS Messenger and are evaluated Gaim. There are two things that I find missing in Gaim and this report is about the second one. In Ms messenger, when received a file, a link to this file is showed in the conversation window. This is missing in Gaim, and you have to check the folder where downloads are placed. Mostly theese filetransfers are only of temporal interest and are most convinitly managed if a link is shown in the conversation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2007-04-20 11:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 Originator: NO As we are closing this tracker, please submit any feature request that is still valid to http://developer.pidgin.im. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pater (pater) Date: 2004-10-23 08:27 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1141802 The problems I see are, remember which folder Gaim uses, browsing to the correct one and when there, knowing which jpg belongs to which conversation comment. >>this is one of the cars I looked at, it was crap. <link to downloaded image> >>this is the one I bought<link to downloaded image>. For me klicking on links in the conversation is the most intuitive way, that is the reason for the suggestion, the option to browse to the download window will always be there. (*) The problem with bloated download folder can be solved with an option to delete the oldest file when the folder contains a setable number of megabytes. (*) Additionally showing a configurable sized thumbnail picture of image downloads would be even better, I would personally configure it to display with the same width as the current conversation window. I think this could be a killer feature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: switch (switcht) Date: 2004-10-23 04:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1144826 Food for thought seeing as how you said that those files are generally only of temporary interest wouldnt it make more sense to go to the location of the file so you can remove it when you're done rather than leaving hundreds of never to be used again files tucked away in a temporary folder. I can't stand microsoft's products propensity to fill %TEMP% with crap they have no intention of cleaning up hehe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pater (pater) Date: 2004-10-19 14:30 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1141802 I agree it is not a bug, I thought the same interface was used for feature requests, I dont understand why the link in the conversation window would be useless, I dont know how ms has solved it, but it could be solved on the receiver side of Gaim by putting up a file:// link in the conversation window when the file is downloaded, as a selectable preferences option. The sent files are often belonging to the discussion e.g. "look at the picture of my new car", etc, and I find it hard to tell which file in the download folder was the one just sent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2004-10-18 21:11 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 FWIW, recent versions of Yahoo Messenger also do this, but this is definitely not a bug, but rather a Request for Enhancement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: DaRocker22 (darocker22) Date: 2004-10-18 20:24 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1073595 This is not a bug... And you must remember that Gaim is not exactly the same as MSN Messenger. Gaim was built to use multiple protcols (msn, aim, yahoo, etc...) And since MSN is the only messenger that puts the link in the conversation window, its then its useless in a Multi messenger. Therefore thats why Gaim uses a Download Manager, which you can change the settings to where your downloads are put and wether or not to close the window after download is complete. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=1049605&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
