A possible way to implement this would be to change the functionality of the close button for IRC channels saved to the buddy list. When the close button is clicked, the window should be hidden. To permenately disconnect from the channel, one would have to right-click on the channel name in the buddy list and choose "disconnect". This feature is useful for users that idle in alot of chat rooms, and need the taskbar space for what they are currently doing. Trillian supports this through their "down arrow" button on the top of every window.
