Summary: enable enum.164 lookups within Gaim

Initial Comment:
Currently we run a service at e164.org to enable among
other things VoIP routes to be efficiently stored in a
centralised fashion via scalable DNS infrastructure.

This system isn't limited to purely VoIP information
(SIP/IAX/H323) as users currently have the ability to
store non-VoIP information as well, such as AIM,
Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, IRC, FTP, mailto, HTTP, LDAP, GPG
Fingerprints and even X.400 style LDAP street address
fields. As new uses come up we are willing to review
suggestions to increase support for more protocols.

Due to requests by Jabber developers, we went ahead and
add XMPP and other IM protocols to our database. They
request this feature as they wanted to leverage our
systems for XMPP URIs to make it easier to lookup
contact information using only their phone number.

Some thoughts on how this could be incorporated into
the gaim application were to add a menu item "Search
for user by Phone Number", then throw up a search
dialog which then sends out a request to do a DNS lookup.

If any results are returned from DNS an address book
type display could pop up with the ability to add any
contacts to Gaim that Gaim both supports and the user
is logged onto a service. Any other pieces of
information could be greyed out but show for
informational purposes only.

The benefit in this system is that a person can store
virtually an unlimited amount of ways to contact
him/her via one simple number, rather then trying to
tell their contacts every single way to contact them.

I perceive a big benefit in this for Gaim and it's user
base as it would more efficiently unify how users
contact each other across the IM networks.

I was led to believe there is some limitation in DNS
handling for plugins.

Sounds like a fun idea. Why not make a plugin that does
this, and additionally, allows users to post and edit their
data?

I forgot to mention that enum.164 is covered by many RFCs,
such as http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2915.html and
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2916.html
